Sometimes the paint wears off of them quickly.

I've got an MS251 that I bought a year ago. It also doesn't seem to sling any oil except at WOT. But the oil resevoir goes down in sync with the gas resevoir, and I took it into my Stihl dealer and he said it was oiling just like it is supposed to. I don't think mine has an adjustable oiler.

7/32 is way too much file for .325 chain.

I use a 13/64 on a .325 chain with more tooth to get the gullet a little better and then 3/16 as the tooth wears.

Any pics? I agree with the lack of hook and I don't think simply not tilting will cure it.

You only want a small amount of the file to be above the top plate.

its my understanding only pro model saws have an adjustable oiler. Both my 261 and 460 do and my 290 doesnt. This will be the first time ive adjusted it.

Everything in red should be filed down to the tie strap.

Blue shows your cutter angle. Lower the whole file to create more hook like the yellow line

10° down angle on the file handle is a good thing. It makes the working corner stronger and the outside of the cutter sharper to help self-feeding.

Heres a pic of a good cutter to try and mimic

I think 290's have an adjustable oiler.

my old .325 16" Oregon chains had a good hook like that and i was using a 7/32 file to sharpen. I could file "deeper" I sharpen free hand using only the file. I decided to buy some 3/16' files and use the correct size.
Is the pictured tooth hand ground or machine?

The pictured cutter is from a grinder, but it's the same for filing. The proper file size will require you to file the gullet after sharpening the cutter. You shouldn't be able to reach both in a single pass

Checked under my circa 2010 MS290 and this looks like an oiler adjustment farmer steve IMG_1088.JPG
Thanks for the sharpening tips huskihl . Just when i though i was a decent hand sharpener too!:picard: I turned the oiler screw up a tad and noticed the stream of oil was better.
Dumb question...If one tops off the bar oil and gas then runs the saw til its out of gas. How much oil should remain? Basically how much oil per full tank of gas. I understand there are variables...bar length, temperature etc.

If your oiler is turned up the whole way 1 to 1.

I agree w/ Kevin’s post above. That’s what I was getting at asking for another pic. I think it’ll get you on the right track.
With extra force being placed on the bar, it heats up the rails and the paint fails. Since I’ve kept my chains crazy sharp, my bars retain the paint mich longer.

Yep, that's the oil adjuster. Our 029 is adjustable.

I think mine is a bit older (1992) Brad but now I'll look again. Most of my Stihl's are about 1/2 tank of oil to a tank of fuel. YMMV.

I was wrong.:picard: My 290 does have the AO. Hard to see the hole in the handle. Not the same place as my other saws.

T.Jeff Veal said his 029 has one. Not sure when Stihl went from the 029 to the MS290. I had a circa 1993 026
