Yep flux looks terrible. I use to this ot was my welding ability...then I welded with a mig machine and it looked amazing. Plus I had someone else tell me that that look and all the splatter is characteristic of Flux. I taught my self to weld with a cheap HF Flux welder. I just assumed it was me and the machine that it looked so bad.
I learned on a Miller arc and a Lincoln mig probably 20 years ago and was good but then I didn't weld for a long time so I had to re teach myself. I purchased a Hobart stick welder that was great but I wanted to mig more than arc so I went for a new welder again. Now I run a fantastic forney that realllllly welds nice with gas but not so much with flux. Flux is hard to get the heat right too it gets pretty sloppy if I haven't used flux in a while it was windy the other day so I blew all the coating off the wire but I don't care it's stuck together pretty good so I'm happy.
Well I am happy with how strong it is and I found a spot to anchor to the actual frame too so it got painted today! Oliver green tractor and implement enamel that I bought probably 5 years ago and it's sat in my garage for a LOOOONG time and still sprayed out nice! Win!!!!
I have some Massey Ferguson red that still does the same that I use whenever I need paint and don't care about color. Have some black rustolium that will get a skim coat on top, but peel that off and it's still good. I use that for everything black. It's probably 3 years old. The can before that I ran over in the work parking lot, it was at least that old then and still good. That enamel paint lasts!! The rustolium brushes on well too. Lays nice n flat. Brushed the frame of my trailer when I redecked it a yard and a half ago. And painted thebattery tray of my golfcart when I built it.
