If you want to bypass St. Louis, you can take I-55 down to Sikeston, go over to Dorena & take the ferry across the Mississippi to Hickman, KY. It will add a few miles & about 45 minutes to your trip but probably a once in lifetime experience for you kiddo. I always enjoy taking it across, nothing like crossing a big river on a concrete slab. Lol. It makes for a nice rest stop, you can walk the deck while crossing, about a a 15 minute ride. There is restroom on board as well. I think it’s $18 - $20 to cross. Dorena - Hickman Ferry
wildwest My wife likes doing crossword puzzles as well. She buys books of them at the grocery store. That might be cheaper than buying a lot of newspapers.
Of all things I'm partial to two different authors published in various newspapers lol. But I also do the other puzzles on the crossword page section (the easier ones, not like the NYT ones I have no idea about whatever pop culture or design fad or other nonsense)
Phew! WWW finally relented to leaving Tues rather than 7 am Monday morning. TBH that was unrealistic to begin with. Anyway he refuses to drive through NE . Something about bird hunts there, driving hours and hours and feels like no progress. Idk, whatever he needs. So replanning route and have enough notice to cancel a couple hotel reservations I made when kiddo and I were planning the Northern route with all the advice from you kind hoarders. Also this is the trip of my lifetime, I want to take pictures of us at all state line signs. Since he relented on working next Friday on east coast we should have time for that now. Sad issue. My mother is not doing well. I pray we have enough money for plane tickets for me and kid with golf cart/wheel chair through the airports and a hotel when the time comes. That said if I did travel I would be useless in bed for minimum one day + after I arrived there, that would be awful in a hotel. I saw her last month picking kiddo up from family relay to me and we both mentioned this might be the last time we ever see eachother. It's all unreal guys.
So you folks are going thru Kansas then ? I-70 across Kansas isn’t much different than I-80 across Nebraska. Lol. If you go thru KS, from Abilene - Manhattan ( Little Apple ) areas would be your best bets for overnight. Junction City has an A &W restaurant ( about the only one I know of left around ) in the Sapp Brothers truck stop. Fort Riley is in that stretch as well. I would definitely avoid staying in Topeka though. I am very sorry to hear your mother is in poor health.
Thanks, going to do that!! Will hotel in Union City. Just need one more night between there and SC which I'll do tomorrow. PHEW, flight from DC was delayed, and delayed again and once more. He barely made it to the puddle jumper from DIA to here, he ran to the gate and got boarded. He'll be home in ~ hour from now. Wow, we've never been apart this long since 1990/1. What a crazy period in our lives.
Good Luck…. JimBear … I-70 is toll in Topeka area…. From KC to St. Louis…. Construction sites.. they are redoing portions of the highway…. That was in May… I also run Waze app when traveling… Good followers on that app to give heads up on travel routes… from police to construction to vehicles on the side of the road…
I forgot to mention that toll road crap. I figured that 70 construction was done. I guess I should have checked MODOT. Home Page | Missouri Department of Transportation
I-40 from Nashville to Asheville is a nice drive. Then I-26 down to Columbia, I-20 towards Myrtle Beach is good... We could almost meet ya'll in Columbia, it's about 2.5 hrs from home...
Yep, I did get a toll bill in the mail from his June trip. I was going to send a pic of it, seems he might have got turned around, exited and entered highway twice in 10 minutes and got dinged for every single one lol.
