Born2Burn, glad you posted because since I started this thread, I did some further digging and got pretty sold on getting a Suzuki DR-Z400, unsure on the exact model, and even used. Supposedly, this bike has changed almost none in 20 years and has a big following. Of course, that is counter to your post! I did find a few used ones in great shape for less than $7,000.

I am interested in what you say about KTM. Can you comment on how a KTM enduro bike would compare to the Suzuki?

Your 300cc size is appealing. What a good looker!

I am also encouraged to read your comments that enduros are popular. This is something I could see myself as possibly doing. Just having access to trails is a biggie to me, as most all my trails are not accessible anymore, times have changed. If there are spots one can travel to, I could see going there for a weekend just to have access to nice woods to ride. Winning races is not important to me at my age!

The DRZ 400's are solid units. They are tried and true. I can't knock them BUT they are heavy, and are equipped with 1990's technology.

KTM's will be significantly more costly, especially new, but I would take a look at the 350 or 500exc 4 stroke models. Just the reduction in weight alone is worth it, not to mention the smooth power and factory hydraulic clutch!

Born2Burn, how do YOU feel about your 300, is it 2stroke, what do you think of it and your preferences for it or the 350 or 500exc? TIA. Riding a 4stroke dirtbike is just so odd to me but I've never ridden one, everything was 2stroke 50 years ago when I rode!

I would ride offroad for sure but also on paved roads to get to the offroad!

Couple years ago a friend of mine invited me to go riding with him at an offroad park a little over an hour away. He rode his 250 2 smoke and let me ride his Kawi 450. I grew up on a dirt bike so intimidated I was not. One thing that has progressed more than anything.. suspension technology. This thing was insane. (pic for reference)

So much different than a high strung 2 stroke. You lean on a big flat torque curve instead of ringing it's neck. I do prefer the 2T btw. Call me old fashioned, or nostalgic maybe?
