It is a good thing most of the people here are members of the other PETA group--People Eating Tasty Animals
Yeah and that is what pinches my chain: Deer=Venison Cow=Beef Rabbit=Hosenpheffer Pig=Pork Lamb...cute little ole lamb=Lamb Who in the world wants to eat a cute lamb? As a sheep farmer I have said for years we need to make some made up name to replace lamb. Goodness, they have Hosenpheffer for Rabbit, what kind of word is that? Latin????
I like rabbit. For food and company...we even have a pet bunny called...Bunny. A few months ago I was driving on a road and a wild rabbit ran out and I hit it, and I honestly think I killed it. I would do almost anything to avoid hitting a wild rabbit as they get hit hard here by coyotes and fox. Deer on my farm do well because I allow...I encourage coyote hunters to run their dogs after the coyotes due to my sheep, but also because I have miles of sheep fence. It is only 4 feet high, but the deer can jump over it, but the coyotes plow into it and then have to find a way around...in other words the deer can put some distance between the coyote and them.
Hassenpfeffer is the name of a stew made with rabbit meat. Rabbit meat is called rabbit, curious too how lamb meat gets named after the animal reaches a certain age hogget or mutton. Where might someone find your lamb meat for sale?, I'd love to try some.
I did not know it was a specific dish, I thought it was just the meat name. In fairness duck is also called duck like lamb is called lamb. BUT it is duck. Hannaford has lamb.
Well let nature take care of itself...if there aren’t enough rabbits, then the coyotes and fox population cull themselves. At least to a degree.
Actually that would be called fowl. But you could range the different kinds of game for that being anything from ptarmigan to quail to duck to Pheasant and then up. Just regionally it finds a different name based on popularity of the game.
I have a different take on life I guess. Part of it is reading the bible where it says man has dominion over the wildlife, but also a moral arrangement with my neighbors. I do not hunt, but they like too, and as long as they are just leaving tracks, what does it matter if they are hunting wildlife as long as it is within what the law says is sustainable? In other words, I am not into helping poachers, but real hunters...sure, have at it...they are not my deer/coyotes/rabbits/squirrels/moose/etc, they just happen to be on my land. I bulldozed a road for the coyote hunters so they did not have to drive 2 miles out around to get over to my place if they were running the coyotes hard. That is what I mean by I help the local hunters out. When their dogs get on a coyote track, they don't know where the property lines are.
Wow 2 cords. What's your elevation? Sounds you live on what ice fishermen refer to as the Pocono Plateau. It's been mild so far in SE PA. I've only burned about 1/3 cord, but I only heat 1500 sq. ft.
Most animals meat is named after the animal. Goose, duck, chicken, turkey, fish, frog, crab, lobster, shrimp, etc. I think you got the only three that we have a special name for the meat. I'll eat a lamb chop any day of the week sans that gross mint jelly.
Here's one! Uhhh yeah guy after I get a release of liability from you. Notarized... "Medium sized oak tree ready to be cut up and hauled away. Conveniently leaning against side of house for easy access. Just yards from bottom of driveway. Just in time for the holidays! Bring your truck and tools and haul all of it away, and the glorious oak is all yours."
Alls I can say is, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! "$100.00 PER CORD. DRIED AND CURED MANZANITA. FREE DELIVERY. PICKUP AND WHOLESALE AVAILABLE."
I would like to know the first person who ever decided to pick up a lobster and eat it. You have to admit they are kind of creepy. Up until 100 years ago when transportation improved, lobster was only for the very poor. In fact, because Maine's prison is on the coast, they passed a law where it is illegal to feed inmates lobster more than once per week! I caught this bad boy off Criehaven Island a few years ago. A 12 pounder, but we throw all the little ones back, so into the Gulf of Maine it went (I am actually kidding, a person can only keep them from 1-5 pounds)
Brings back memories. Used to vacation in a little cabin on Vinalhaven. Totally spoiled me, I cannot eat lobster that has been trucked hundreds of miles now Memorial Day toss in the dock, run up the flag and our Lobsterer friends would drop off buckets of bugs fresh from the water. Had to look up Criehaven. That’s out there. I’ve seen smooth flat water rounded solid black stone that reportedly came from an island out near Matinicus. Forget the name. As a mason I was always interested in that stone. Could make a fortune building fireplace fronts with that stuff. Also heard it was against the law to remove said stone. Guessing you live somewhere in that area. Very beautiful place.
Love those ocean-going bugs. Nothing more than a pot of boiling water, a dip into butter. Nice cold Sam Adams to wash it down.
My first wife was a lobsterwoman and her parents owned a lobster pound so fresh seafood meant walking 300 feet down to a floating crate and steaming up whatever was inside. That was kind of nice. Whatever was in season is what we ate; lobster always, but clams, shrimp, tuna, scallops, etc. As kids we used to drive over to Sears Island and dig a mess of clams, boil them up on the clam flat on a fire, and depending on the tide which may or may not trap us on the island, stay or leave. Then they decided to turn it into a deep water cargo port, but the Sierra Club caused such a stir that they dropped the idea, but not after making a nice two lane highway out across a new causeway. That resulted in the dumbest thing I ever did, and YES that does include running over an 8 pound Stihl 461 Stihl with a 16,000 pound Clark skidder. Under contract with the Maine Dept of Environmental protection, we took an excavator, went through the stump pile and replanted them...yep tax payer money to plant stumps. Yep, you read that right. We planted...stumps! I was even doing a good job of smoothing everything up, but they wanted it pockmarked for the salamanders. Anyway, today the 900 acre is land is a park, but of course no digging clams or spending the night, just a nice fence across the road they call progress. Not the good memories I had as a kid.
