Again in advance of tomorrow, thank you all for your service to this great nation. we sleep safe at night thanks to all of you past present and future. all branches and services.
"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." Not all Veteran's died for their "friends", but all signed up for the possibility. Happy Veteran's Day!
Grandfather was US Army, WWI, WWII, Korea. IG office, retired after 33 years active and reserve as full bird colonel. I should have followed his example but I missed many opportunities to serve. 4 years of military college and AFROTC (Norwich) and I decided to be a civilian instead. Still my greatest regret. Am making up for it somehow by being part of a team that takes care of 130 Veterans who call my workplace their home (VT Veterans Home) I am the facilities director. We celebrate every service birthday and holiday and our Town Memorial Day and Veteran's Day parades end here. If any of you are passing through the southern end of Vermont come visit.
I had missed this section of the board... 18yrs service Kansas Army National Guard Staff Sergeant Communications NCO, truck driver, and FDC. Retired earlier this year due to medical reasons. I miss some of the stuff, but am glad to be out of there. Charles

Glad to have you with us. Not only are these the greatest wood hoarding folks on the interwebs, but they support our military and veterans just as passionately. Welcome!!
Did you get out before 9/11? If it was after , they let you go!! If it was before, did you regret not being able to go into theater or glad you missed it? If you don't want to answer I understand as well, I'm not judging either way as well.
Actually I got out in July of 01'. And yes I do regert not going over to the sandbox. I did kick around going back in but I had my family going at that point and my wife wouldn't have been too happy, she was scared to death and probably wouldn't be able to deal if something would happen to me. At this point it wasn't just about me I had 3 other people who were depending on me! Although I did explain to her that I was on inactive ready reserve for a period of time and if they needed me and I fot the call I had to go. But they never called I guess it just wasn't meant to be. But yes I do think about it quite often and deep down wished that I would've got the call!
I totally understand that. Being there for you kids or should I say missing a year or two of their life would be the hardest part.
Yes and the hardest part for them anyways would be if you didn't come back. I'd do what I'd have to do if asked because after all that is the price of freedom and what made this country so great, the willingness and the balls to defend it at any and all costs!
Amen brother!! I remember after 9/11 Jills oldest son was in the marines and deployed on the USS Peleliu, he was a heli crew chief, can't remember the model off the top of my head. He was amongst the first in, and took small arms fire. Jill was worried TO DEATH. Trying to console and calm her was about the worst I have had to do. Chaz
