Sooooo... a week ago thus morning I went to get out of bed and felt a pop in my lower back, then my back and hips locked up. I just thought maybe I pulled a muscle, and went on with my day. Monday just felt like I had over done it physically on the week end, Tuesday I woke up to pain in my left leg and numbness and arm, and numbness in my foot..... awww crap... My orthopedic doctor is off on Tuesdays so had to wait till the next morning to get in. He looked my over and had me do stupid human tricks. Said well it could be a reherniation of the disk I just had fixed 12 weeks ago, or another disk... but we are going to hope it's a muscle thing and do therapy, and we'll "they" don't like to go right back in for surgery anyway. I ask who "they" is.... insurance company. Well I rely don't care what they like can we do a MRI to see what's going on? He tells me his hands are tied, he has protocol to fallow, but a specialist could get things moving faster, I just can't send you to one until we try more... wink wink nod nod..... basically told me to call my surgeon, see what he says. So I have an appointment this afternoon with the surgeon again. I guess this is pretty normal for people my age that are active. We kinda forget that we had back surgery, don't keep up with exercise, and stop being careful how you do things.... check, check and check, yup that was me. I've talked to two people that have had to have thus surgery twice, both at 6 months or less post op.

Wow, this is not good news....but not surprising either. I had the same thing happen but not from lack of exercise. It just sometimes happens. I gave in and had surgery but after the third one I put a stop to it. The last one was in 1987. So what has it been like. Many time like pure Hell. It is a thing some of us live with daily and it doesn't get any easier. One of the biggest problems is that arthur almost always pays you a visit later on and he is not kind at all. There are many days I simply can not do a thing but thank God there are days when I can. Most folks don't understand me at all and think I am crazy. Well, they are right about the crazy part though. But they don't understand why I do the things I do. It is because that is what I choose to do. Yes, I hurt and yes, I have to take pain medication. My choice. I'd rather do this than be forced to sit on my backside all the time and watch someone else do the things I should be doing.

It is the same thing with the thing I'm going through right now. Some days I can barely walk. Other days I'm okay. Today was a good example. I've been refusing pain medication for the leg and hip but gave in to it today so I could get some work done. Then late this afternoon, as I was coming out of the barn, I must have stepped wrong. Perhaps you heard me?! So now I can't use the leg the rest of the day. Hopefully tomorrow will be better but I have so much meds in me I should sleep well tonight.

I have stated this for your benefit. I don't want to paint you a pretty picture because most likely it won't be easy from this point on. You have to face it and come to grips with it. However, that does not mean you can't make certain that something can't be done to help ease the pain and I hope you can find something. Do what you can and force the insurances to do what they are supposed to do. It is about a person's life; not how much profit they have to make.

btw, I do have more discs that are bad. A total of seven more. No, it isn't pretty.

Sorry to hear about the setback Farmhand.
Knowing you probably are out of pocket on your deductible for the year, it makes sense to want the process to be rushed along. Remember this is your back and there is only one of them in your life.
do your part take it easy on the back, let the docs do theirs and the insurance should follow suit

Thanks guys... appointment with my surgeon went as expected, very short Q&A on my pain, how and when it started, and location. Now I have a MRI appointment next Monday early, then a follow up with him right after. He isn't certain what's going on with out the MRI, did say he is looking deeper this time and in more locations due to the nerve urination in my arm and fingers. So we will see next week. Good thing is I can do 99% of my work from home, in bed if need be... the other 1% my dad and business partner can take care of. My surgeon didn't act surprised to see me back, says it happens.

I'm actually dealing with this a lot better then the first time, I know I could....no should have kept on exercise and being more careful, but can't change the past, and may have happened no matter what.

Backwoods Savage thanks for the straight shooting, no BS... the way I am looking at it is, as long as I still get to see Lovely Wife and Little Guy, and maybe another kid down the road, that's all I need... I can and will deal with what ever cards I'm delt.

basod yep out of pocket is done for 15' so this will get done ASAP... well what ever this is. And I will do a lot better for my back from now on, surgeon said it's the little day to day things are the straw that breaks the camels back (pun intended) and those are the hardest to watch... been doing these things for almost 40 years now, but gotta change.

I know how good I can feel, and will do anything I can to get back to that place.

So, had the MRI on Monday, no surprise I do have a reherniated disc in the same location. Surgeon said his advice was to do the same surgery over, no fusion or titanium rods. So I was scheduled tomorrow afternoon. We'll I got a call about 4:30 today, they had a cancelation tomorrow morning at 6:30... yep I'll take it, just means that Lovely Wife and need to be out the door at 4:45... but I'd rather do that then go till afternoon with out food or drink.

Here's hoping this one lasts a lot longer.

I'm home! Surgery went well, herniation was bigger then the MRI showed, but feeling great! Less the surgical pains. I feel more mobile this time, last time I felt more restricted by the residual pains, non of that this time around... still got a long way to go. Funny thing, the surgeon told my wife that this surgery is so common, of the 9 people working on my surgery, my surgeon had done this same procedure on all of them!

So on my road to recovery yet again, will be easing into things a little slower this time, and plan on more exercise.
