Woke up this morning to 30°F, the high for today. It has been breezy and dropping since. Tonight is going to be around 10°F and tomorrow's high about 25°F. The house is comfortable now but when the sun goes down it will start to chill a little with one stove. Later today I'll fire the downstairs stove. I'll probably burn wood since it will be a short cold spell.

If it was forecast to be below freezing for a longer period I would load the second stove with coal. Wood is cheap but coal is easier. The coal fire will burn on low for a full day without tending. All I need for temps between 0°F and 25°F is a little help from the downstairs stove to keep the house comfortable.
