Sounds like the ratchet straps did the job; just be careful about kickback.

Wife had a flat tire last night and while I was waiting for her to finish with her patient I was talking with the receptionist and she mentioned she had switched over to propane and were going to have some trees taken down for a barn. I asked if they used the wood and she said no, not with the gas conversion and a matter of fact, they had a big tree cut down that's just laying in the yard already. I asked if I could have it and she's going to check with her husband but pretty sure I just scored my first scrounge! Truck and chainsaw will travel!

Finally found the Fiskars maul I've been looking for locally (instead of ordering online)!

Only had a couple small rounds of oak to split in 1/2 and 1/3 and I can tell I like it already! This oak was one I found that was on the ground and a fresh split reads 18%. I'll take that!

We'll shoot. I broke the Fiskars already. Put a crack in the bash guard when I hit a piece of oak that split like the peace sign. What the heck, I wasn't even swinging hard

I have not found one of those in the wood pile but I have hundreds of those things on hand. I was using them for BIOS updates but you can make a flash drive bootable.

So last night I realized not only is there an open and closed position but it appears to have a 1/2 way by pushing the dampner handle in towards the stove.

Also, I've got to improve my wood ID because whatever I burned last night was still going this morning which has never happened.

So remember those cut offs from trimming the splits to length? They make great kindling. Previous owners left me a crate but it has cracks in the bottom and dirt and chips falls trough to the carpet.

Cut a piece of scrap plywood to fill in the bottom and loaded up my kindling for easy access. The hatchet method was a little dangerous but I found tapping down on a piece onto the Fiskars maul upside down works surprisingly well without pieces flying. Very contained mess too.

And of course pics or it didn't happen
