Seems to be 5 lug 4.75 which is GM as I thought, guess it's just not the same as my dads Chevy as expected.

Your thread slash posts are just downright addicting. The photos of your wood plus miscellaneous is a wholesome project that everyone has put some sort of input. Its like a woodsmans version of This Old House! I like these projects CtRider! Keep posting we'll keep listening.

Thanks! I have been going through a lot of indecision on a splitter. I love splitting by hand but I've got other projects and time is something I can't make more of.

Buddy has the 22t Ariens and I like the Husqvarna (good dealer, kickstand design, cover plate over controls, looks). Husq only
makes a 27t and it's 150 more than the the Ariens 27t. I love my Husq dealer but the best he could do was $50. I really don't need the 27 so I think I'm going to get the 22t Ariens. That dealer wants $50 to assemble the thing...a buddy has an Ariens dealer he loves that assembles for free but it's over an hour away. So we'll see.

Since I'm a research til I'm blue in the face guy, if anybody is wondering (I know now pretty much everything on these stupid things)

    Ariens 22t/27t
    - suburban motor
    - dual stage pumps
    - cycle time 13/15
    - 3 yr warranty
    - much popular
    - $1200/$1600 sticker price

    Husqvarna 27t
    - Koehler motor
    - single stage pump
    - 15 sec cycle time
    - 2yr warranty
    - $1750 sticker price

27t on both gets you fenders which seem in my way so I think the 22t without will be more comfortable against my leg.

Husq has extra metal over the hydro valve that I like but not worth the price difference.

Went to another Ariens dealer after work and he doesn't carry the 22t, just the 27 and 34 because the 22 isn't heavy duty. Geesh, this is becoming a sign I don't need a splitter haha.

Seems like they are just putting a selection of splitters that will require heavy duty use but think about it this way: If you try a splitter and you like it, you'll be looking at longevity in a splitter. Ariens is amazing I dont have a splitter but these are trusty engines for lawnmowers and the like so you're very much going to get what you pay for. With that being said, the value is there as well. Even if you use it for a part of your splitting, you could do well in selling it later on and get something else that fits your needs. With where you live, I don't think wood burning is coming to any end.

Thanks. I hardly consider a 22t machine "light duty" simply because of the motor mount. It's a smaller motor so it doesn't need the beefier motor mount that extends off the frame.

Happy birthday Matt. You make me feel old. My son was born in 1966 and so is much older than you.

Glad to hear it. Been working on the trailer today and snapped two of new bolts. Either Home Depot bolts are weak or moving a lot wood lately means my internal torque wrench is off. [IMG]

Looking good for the next project!!!
Just wondering what you're torquing. I wouldn't think anything from Home depot is worthy of torquing to an extreme. Best to go to a machine shop that makes those kinds of bolts. Higher grade steel is likely to be there plus likely to last longer. We tend to have galvanized steel on our trailers but not sure if its made for torquing unless you have a good sized gauge of bolt. I remember shearing off some metal bolts myself on a couple simple projects. Low grade metal.
One tip though. I always thought that I would want the wood and metal that is holding it together would be breaking down all at the same time. That way if one thing starts rotting, its time to start replacing the whole thing. Our trailer for hauling whatever is in need of this. About 12-15 years ago it was done from top to bottom grinding of the frame and new walls and floor. Time for an overhaul this summer

The bolts I snapped were just some new 1/4 20's to hold the new fenders on.

Hm hopefully a machinist or bolt savvy may chime in here but I recommend higher grade steel. I just gotta ask but are those bolts you're using steel?
