So went to the little grocery in town came home with this to try. It gave Mrs Butterworth a run for her money.
Haven't noticed that before but I'll have to keep an eye out... I love watching the seasons change back there - especially the spring and fall. I wish more butterflies were attracted to my sap and syrup production.... The ants sure love it!
Didn't recognize the name on the bottle. Hmmm, Google has a way of pulling up odd stuff. http://www.ourherald.com/news/2012-03-29/Front_Page/Owner_Seeks_To_Unload_Building.html
Here in Vermont, that stuff used to be called "Fancy" grade syrup. Guaranteed all the out-of-state tourists would buy it all up, at a premium price, thinking that it was the best we had to offer. Meanwhile, the natives would hoard the Grade A Dark and Grade B because it was such a strong maple flavor. The last time I made syrup at home, it was like smoked molasses. I think I went too far....
Anybody with any maple syrup updates? I'm boiling some down since this afternoon, not much. Next week's temps are looking perfect and I'll tap another 24 trees. I need to step up my game, time is runing out.
Seems like things are picking up here. Got about 10 gallons in the last two days. Haven't added any new taps yet but I might this weekend since the snow is melting pretty fast.
I boiled down the little I collected. Ended up with around 24 oz. Made a big batch of pancakes tonight and was delighted with the flavor. Im hoping by next weekend, there is higher yield.
We've had a REALLY strong run since Tuesday, I'm guessing because the ground is finally starting to thaw and that's letting the sap flow from the roots.. I boiled off around 30 gallons on Sunday and another 55 gallons Wednesday evening, so far I've got close to 2.5 gallons of syrup! I've got a double pine removal tomorrow morning, then I'm putting out 30-40 more taps and I'll cook off the 55 gallons I've collected since Thursday. ..finally starting to pick up, looks like next week will be PRIMO temps here for sappin'! Here's a sneak peek at some of the pics I've taken so far. Lots more to come, also getting some video.....
Uh yeah, odd stuff, like syrup from Utah being sold as Vermont maple syrup. That's what I read at least, among other things. Ok, reading it again, I see the paper is out of VT. The Mormons come from Utah to visit. Whatever.
I really like your setup Scotty The sap here started 3 days ago for me.We only have 8 taps out have collected around 5 gallons so far.
