Called at 3:00 still not back from rental
    Will call in morning.
They seem to be honestly telling the truth to me
But hope I'm not getting jerked around!

Hope it works out for you. That's a great price for that model of saw.

I'd just tell them I'll be there in the morning, it'd be great if you'd hold the saw so I can take it home.
I ran a 455 for a while, I now have a 6401. You'll like the 6401. 84cc kits are still available, I have one not yet installed but should make it a beast.
    Good luck. JB

Saw still not returned. Gotta call again in morning. Something kinky going on here?

I learned that the Home Depot stores get a list each month, the first week of the month, telling them what units to sell and suggested sell price and lowest to take

Yeah...somethings starting to smell funny here...maybe they can't find it...or sold it out from under you and aren't admitting it

Seems odd to me. You can search all the stores in your area for used rental tools at this link here:

Barcroftb I've been using that web link and it still shows the saw in the store
The full timers will be in the store in the morning and will talk to them again
I'll get this saw just might be from another store another time!

Here is a slightly different web link for the used tools. click here
and YES it still shows the Makita in the store

Something strange going on with the links you provided mikeward . When I input my location as Champaign, Illinois it returns a store 130 miles to the north near Chicago. I have rented things from that Champaign store so I know they have a rental department. When I use this search thing it does bring up the store I have been in. Oldman47 Huh thats odd. It does the same thing with the site link that Barcroftb posted
try poking around with some other zip codes
I only enter a zip no town or state.
If your store has nothing for sale maybe it doesn't show!

The thing is, it was using that remote town as the search center. The things it listed as available used were more or less centered on that town as if I lived there.

Maybe you could reserve the saw for rental since it is so popular. Once in your hand then buy.

Here's an HD Rental 6401 on ebay auction. Price still decent but you just don't know about P&C. I'd rather read "scored P&C" and get it for $50 shipped. Then, put a 7900 top end on it.

Oldman47 , LinkedXJ sounds like your location is a black hole to the algorithm used in the location software

    Update on the Makita
I call every morning at 9:30 and 3:00 before shift change
Saw is still not in. I seriously suspect something odd is going on.
They have another Makita in the store for rent but serial #s are not the one for sale.
But the one for sale is still out on rental??
Something is fishy. I'm gonna keep calling for another week
Maybe they'll sell me the other one to get rid of me
I now know the names of all the full timers working there and their tech as well

Hammy thanks, I'm sure going to try!
I don't really need the saw but would love to get it and check it out.
My Husky has served me well but tends to bog down in big wood 22" and up.
I'll be persistent checking with HDepot but won't be a duck and get angry and demanding like a lot of people around here.
    We'll see what happens...

Called this morning and the saw came back but won't start.
Talked to the tech and he will look at it today
Don't know if this is gonna happen but we'll see

Every time I talk to them I get a different excuse. The longest repeated one was its out on rental.
To be honest my BS meter is going off when I hear their answers!
    I stay friendly and chitchat.
But they all sound so honest and genuine
    We'll see...
