Making progress

This is what is left to get out of the ditch before road work begins on Monday. This is wood cut by the county road crew a few months ago. I was told most of this wood is Ash and I have seen tracks under the bark and a small hole in the pieces I cut. I have finished splitting and stacking about half of what I had there, as seen in one of the pics, and this is what I have left to split, hopefully on Saturday. Yesterday I cut the last of the rounds halved or quartered using my splitter and noodling some of them. This wood is extremely stringy. I would like confirmation that this is ash.

 

Definitely not Ash. Looks more like elm bark and is stringy like elm.

 

For sure stringy like elm.

 

What threw me off was the insect tracks under the bark.

Most of the elm I cut and split is already dead and mostly dry. This was still live and kicking. Not used to dealing with green elm I guess. Thanks all. It will make good firewood.

You don’t think it could be ironwood

 

In my experience, the bark on ironwood runs in very distinct vertical lines, and peels/exfoliates a little bit. It's also a darker shade of tan/brown. Stringiness aside, the grain looks like a dead ringer for elm to me too.

This is def ash, the tiny holes are D shaped.

 

Does ironwood grow to be 12-15 inches in diameter? That is the size of all of the wood I cut up and split.

 

Not typically, usually they're smaller than 12" from what I understand. The largest I've personally laid eyes on was maybe 8".

 

Bark and stringiness say elm.
