Not always true. With stoves like the Woodstock soapstone progress hybrid, you have to build a kindling fire to bring it up to about 200° or 250 degrees and then you have to add your splits and then enable the cat you can't go from 0 to 700 on that stove. because if you do you'll mess it up. it says that in the manual.
Non sense, Woodstock stoves are darn near bullet proof! The PH is a steel stove with soapstone on the outside, it's not constructed like a Fireview or their other soapstone stoves that have two layers of soapstone. I'm not sure how taking it to 250 then adding splits changes anything other than establishing a nice coal bed to load full size splits on top of. When you load it full of splits it will go past 250 on it's way to it's final temp.
It's soapstone lined, that's it, the firebox is steel. I'll find the info for you so you know how your stove is actually made.

Okay... Okay... I was mistaken. I thought the PH was made like the Fireview. I don't own a PH yet. I hope to, one day! That explains why the thing puts out the heat. Steel, with soapstone with the iron too.... No wonder. My apologies. But, that manual says do not go from cold to raging fire... obviously for good reasons.

But I make my OWN starters and kindling, always have. It's a matter of personal preference. Plus I get all kinds of cedar and sappy pine heartwood so it's convenient and even FUN for me...

Well, sometimes you can forget things that are printed in manuals. That definitely is not how we start our fires in our Woodstock stove! And no, we've not messed it up yet. We are starting our 9th year with the Fireview. So far, we've changed one gasket. End of maintenance. But I agree, you do not want to take that stove up to 700 degrees from a cold start very quickly.
