I have been using a Pferd lately when I'm getting the saw ready. I leave the flat file out and touch up the rakers with a Husky gauge. I think I press down to hard, and it lowers the rakers too much. I bring a spare chain with me, and I'll just swap it out in the woods if needed.

I voted outside since that’s where I typically sharpen saws. Also have a garage and wood working shop to do it in if needed.

Wife would kill me if I put a saw on our dining room table. it’s on old barn door made of red oak, from 1800’s and was turned into a table by some artist in Cape Cod for friends of ours. When they sold their Cape house, they didn't have room for the table, so we bought it since it fit ours well. Somewhere in the safe is the paperwork on it, including the farm name, year, and town it came from. IMG_2774.jpeg IMG_2775.jpeg

I voted shop (actually in my barn) but I do a good bit of filing when out cutting. Use the grinder mainly to fix chains where I “find” stuff in the trees like nails, wire, spikes….ya’ll know! Or to bring back chains that get a little off from hand filing

I have a small workshop in one of the rooms in my unfinished basement. Square grinder and all things chainsaw are housed there.
