It's almost to the point of tradition around here. If a thread hasn't been hijacked.....something's wrong.
On the loose glass issue; not sure. It if gets warm enough that I can shut the stove down I am going to measure the opening that the glass sits in as it may be the door was cast larger than it should have been? Not sure how they do their cast iron casting; if that is in house or farmed out to a cast iron shop. I know that some may get upset over this but I think I need to talk with other Madison owners as I appear to be the only one on this forum.
HA! As I understand the casting process, you don't just get 1 or 2 with a "too large" window opening...if it is off, there will be a bunch of 'em off. Also, I'm not sure but I thought I remembered reading that they do their own casting...if not, it is at least cast in USA...not china garbage. How many dart holes ya got in the ole drywall?
All sorts of issues come up with stoves. At this point, I would just forget about why it may have happened, and just get my heater working. 70/50 temps coming your way, so you can let the stove go cold. Make some longer tabs now, so you are ready to go when the warm days get there. Get some flat stock of comparable thickness (maybe slightly thicker,) cut the new tabs with a hack saw and drill the bolt holes. Or have somebody make them for you which would be easy and probably not too expensive. Some time when you have the door open, see how big of a spacer you need at the bottom to hold the glass in position, centered in the opening, to keep it from slipping down. You could use a couple old drill bits, scrap steel or whatever. You will place these under the bottom edge of the glass, straddling the tabs, and the tabs will keep them from rolling out. Let the stove go out, take off the door and GIT 'ER DONE!
None from me, thank you very little.... We use a fiber sheathing board behind the ol' bristle board, and I very rarely hit that either. My wife on the other hand... Man, I can't wait for some resolution on this door/glass thing. Got me up nights...
There's gonna be a lot more posts before this gets anywhere near resolved. It's only been going on two months since posted. Only nine pages so far??? Yeah, lots more! I mean, you're only dealing with a fire inside of a house that you're afraid of spreading due to a failure of equipment, right...what could go wrong? Waiting for temps to warm up for the stove to shut down....must not let the fire go out to clean ashes...? Better take a sleeping pill Eric VW -you're going to lose a lot of sleep! Get it fixed already! Please!
Somebody here must be able to get somewhere close to VA and help her out. And while they are there, they could re-route that Class A straight up through the roof to resolve the blasted draft issue...
