I really wouldn't expect it to last though because let's face it - cutting, stacking, bringing wood in (especially in the dead of winter - some of us below zero lots of the time), keeping the fire going, cleaning up after it with little pieces of wood all over and ash to clean out and discard... its a lot of work. Your neighbors only see the warmth of it all, not the countless hours you'll spend this summer and winter obtaining that warmth!
My second favorite 'sniffing' part is when I'm working in the stacks and the splits are green It's a wonderful aroma of many different species at the same time. I also get this scent when I'm backpacking sometimes, when the wind and the trees are all in the right place at the right time.
They are both in there mid-60's The house has been closed up every winter for the last 35 years that I know of, It was a estate left to them…. City folks from around NY area. I "KNOW" there are sever cracks in the mortar, maybe a critter or two living in the chimney and I pointed those things out….. I was basicly told in a nice way to mind my own business, I'll be standing by
Brand new neighbours up the road and seen a load of logs brought in last week, now almost half cut/split. I know they have no other wood that was left at the house by my friends. Cause i got it. So will be interesting if they are gonna use it this year?
I've noticed a decrease in "free wood" ads on craigslist. I'm glad I scored a few loads earlier this year. I've also noticed quite a few "will come to your house and cut wood" ads out there around me. As for the neighbors, no one seems to be stock piling yet (just me).
This will be my first year burning but I see why people do what they do. Other than one friend of mine, nobody thinks a two let alone three year plan is necessary. People who I know well tell me the oak I CSS in pair is ready to go because it's checked. If I hadn't found this place I would have probably learned the hard way. These are people who have burned wood for years too. I'm fortunate to have my father in laws 3 to 5 year stuff but I'm gonna buy a cord of kiln dried from a reputable supplier here too next week to get this years supply up to about 2.5 cords. Probably the hardest part being new to this is telling people who have done it for years my plan to get ahead - one of those things where they're like what the heck do you know. That said I'm efforting my three year plan.
You warned them...who knows if they'll even have a fire. If they have enough money, they may not even bother.
I've never had a safety issue, but green wood doesn't burn well and doesn't throw as much heat. Both are pretty frustrating.
D4, As most of the old gang here will tell you, and you probably have read, Safety is the most paramount thing I think we all preach her! There is more to having three years worth than just having dry wood although thats important! You waste wood when it's wet, BTU's less than half, your cresote factor goes up drasticly, and takes much more to produce any kind of long burn times. I can think of at least three people on this forum with + 30 years of burning, and a couple of the big dogs with 50+ years! You cannot argue with that experience! There is that old saying, you can tell them… but they don't have to listen. Your here, so you are obviously taking notes
Of 7 homes on our road, 5 burn wood. 1 - serious (us) 2 - semi-serious occasional (wood stoves) 1 - ambience only (open fireplace) 1 - fireplace using wet oak Only one other home has stacks. The others buy a pile in September.
I've modified that a bit..... You can lead people to knowledge, but you can't make them think. Some newbies start thinking as soon as they begin a new "thing", looking for the best way to go about doing it. There are some who've been doing things a long time....the right way. I think they all showed up here.
It took me a while to get three years ahead......but this aternoon, as I was stacking, it gave me a warm fuzzy feeling looking at all the wood I have, because I'll be pushing 5 years ahead by the time I'm done stacking. If my estimates are correct, I'll have around 40-42 cord stacked by next month......some call that ridiculous, I call it remarkable!
