Heard a power saw running most of the day, went up the street and a guy i know who has a tree service locally was right in the middle of some big elms 3 people were getting them cut down, or trimmed up. The biggest was at least 28'' on the stump At least! There was a lot of limbs on the ground, and quite a mess. So, one guy came over asked if i wanted the wood, I said, ''sure'' i'll go home get my saw's and be right back. So, i went back, its even on the same street i live on about 5 house's up the street. Took the 261, and 590 echo, and let the fun begin!! I buzzed up a lot of the brush, for one guy , then started loading the pickup. Sure glad i put the air bags on!!! The biggest chunks were so big i had to noodle the biggest one's in half, then quartered them. Didn't take my axe, but had a couple of wedges and a hatchet. Amazing what you can do with a wedge and good hatchet. Had a blast, easiest wood i think i've gotten in a while. NO nails at this point, although i thought i cut one, but, turned out being a knot. Way deep in the main stem. There's still more wood on the ground, i might go back and cut up a lot of the brush and get some of the wood from the other neighbor. "If they will let me take it''. Would have taken pictures, BUT, it was a all of a sudden type of opportunity, maybe tomorrow? Came home split some with the splitter, took a shower and feel great!! i really needed to be out doing what i think i do best, cutting, splitting, and even got some of it stacked before dark. TODAY WAS A GREAT DAY!!
honestly, no problem especially the more clear wood, the knotty stuff not so good. All in all % wise I’d say 70% of it was no problem, but, used the hydraulic splitter. About 9/10 am will probably head back up, too cut up a bunch of the brush. Can’t leave it like it is/was at this point.
Not my preferred wood, but I like Elm. As far as leaving a mess, I'm sure most on here are the same way, just can't leave a mess. The Corps of Engineers taught me that, not by working for them, but by following their rules for cutting on Corps land. Yesterday I had this piece of white oak that tried it's best to imitate an Elm. It won the battle. I think it had a voodoo curse.
lol funny, that looks like a couple of the knotty pieces I used the splitter on. On the Big rounds yesterday, Had to use the 266XP splitter. Really like that old saw, it’s a real BEAST! 30” bar full skip chain, belonged to a retired faller.
Sounds like a great score. Nice that it was close to home and yes a great feeling when you accomplish a lot in a day when firewooding.
