For s&g's try splitting a round after its well below freezing to see if it behaves better. Do you know what species of elm it is? The American elm we have May be tough to split, but never like that. If the elm we have split like that, I'd probably not use it for firewood either.
I did that last time I had elm with no difference, that's been years ago. And I have no idea what species, I posted a pic of the leaves earlier somewhere. I messaged my BIL and it looks like I can't even give the stuff away. t4driller won't take it either, I even offered to deliver!!
Put a hurtin’ on that pile of rounds! Here's the fresh splits and the rest of my stash. And the sun saying adios.
We accidentally split a few rounds of elm today, in the 6/8” range. They weren’t bad at all. One large round got rejected. The wedge went in about 2/3" and the wood absorbed it like a sponge. Double wide splits go 6' and there's another few in the middle which helps keep water from accumulating on the tarp I use. You can see it in this pic. Threw a few blocks up there for the first time. I usually use uglies. So I did the math, there’s about 21’ of length there so a little over 3 cords.
Lol!! I wish I had a kenetic. I'd probably be @ 5 or 6 by now. I'm going to look into a 4 way, should help some.
