My father-in-law is looking to go to pellets and doesn't want to spend a ton of money. There is a 4yr old Leyden for sale. I'm looking for reviews, good and bad. And is it a drop feed or bottom. Thx.
The Leyden is a drop chute feeder, and is a very nice unit. Travis builds nice stuff. Not too complicated, throws great heat. Just make sure you (he) sees it run until the convection blower comes on before buying. More than likely, you'll have to do a complete teardown and blow the stove out w/ compressed air, etc., if you do get it. BTW, what are they asking for it? Any "extras" come with it?
$1000 for stove, whatever piping they had, and a hearth pad. Sounds like a good deal. I'm waiting to hear back from the guy so we can go take a look. I'm gonna plug it in and run it on test mode to make sure it works. Does it have a pot stirrer?
No pot stirrer on any Travis unit, AFAIK. (Maybe the very new unit they just came out with last year??) IMO, that's a very good deal if the stove is in good shape and runs correctly, especially w/ all the extras. Also, there is no "test" mode on a Travis unit. Only "Auto" or "Manual". Here's a pic of the control panel (click on the file to view):
The Lopi (Travis) is a solid unit and has been a performer for years. For $1,000 it's a good deal. Especially with the pad, and some venting. Only being 4 years old makes it pretty new in terms of overall life. And they are very easy on the eyes, live the cast look.
I still haven't heard back from the guy, no phone #, just an e-mail. I'm starting to think someone already swiped it.
