Yes . This is 100% correct. BTDT even on the big commercial unit that TurboDiesel is showing. I ran that exact unit at Dennis's GTG in May. I got a crotch piece of that big oak stuck on the 4 way. It needed the 2 way only to handle that, and that unit is high tonnage.
This is how we handle the bigger rounds on the horizontal splitter. That was some heavy 24" dia hickory. This is another modification we did that really helps with stringy wood. This is the vertical splitter with the pipe platform. That splitter is about 23 yrs old. It's slow, but gets the job done. See how easy the rounds slide, WeldrDave
The 4 way got stuck. The log had to be sledge hammered off. Then the 4 way was taken off and the two way got that "round" done enough where all the crotches were split, and 4 way re installed Mind you that 4 way went thru all of the other crotches. Just that one piece. Noodling those old 100+ yr old tree crotches is waiting for rocks, or golf balls apparently. So most don't try that for fear of rocking a chain.
Weight is weight, no matter species. I don't have hydraulic help to lift, and don't hand split. Plus my saws are . Squeezing a trigger is pretty easy.
I never had to lift these rounds. Pushed with my legs. My solution was the easiest, and no noodles to pick up from my lawn. There was enough clean up already. My dolkita was more than enough, but still the splitter was faster. I did noodle some of that big ash.
You mean these? I bought the Logrite one thinking I'd be using it for just that. I just find both awkward to use while splitting having that extra item to deal with all the time. The Fiskars I find awesome to use in the woods when halving/quartering by hand. I use it to rotate the logs so I can split them as well as just moving rounds around.
I intially had the Fiskars but didn't like the bite. I love the handle. Got the 30" version of the logrite and love the bite but don't like the round handle as much as the contoured one of the Fiskars. But it'd be nice to have a long handled one like that to manipulate things in the truck - pushing or pulling. I do all my work on my driveway (99% of the time) and so I use the hookaroon to pull rounds to and up into my splitting tire to save the back a bit. I'll trade you that long one for the Fiskars if you are interested in that!
I agree with you. The Fiskars probably doesn't have the bite of the Logrite and I too find the round handle not as nice. I can pick up the Fiskars and know exactly which way the head is pointing and don't even have to look. Just pick up, rotate (if necessary) and swing without even looking. The thing is also light as heck. Kinda what I am hoping to use the longer one for. I'm sure I'll find use for it. I just got it towards the end of last winter, so I didn't have a chance to even use it much.
I got a 36” logrite last Xmas and didn’t care for it at first. Filed the spike a little and it started biting better, but still used my 18” forester pickaroon more. Now I use the logrite more than the pickaroon. I’m 6’2, so it alleviates a lot bending while moving rounds around
Cole (Armbru84) looked like he was in the MLB Home Run Derby beating that split off the wedge... he can swing a sledge, I would not want to see that kid angry!!
