That's my point here!!! And I've written to the DMV about it! :headbang: If you have an ATV here in NJ with out a title, It's basically junk. They want you to go through a "title search" $$$ and apply for a title which is more $$$ and so on... o_O:hair:

So dave, let's get this straight, you pass by my house on the way to the gulf caost, we hang out cut some wood run some saws, my ATV comes up. I say I'm going to sell it. I shoot you a price, and it ends up in the back of that ecodiesel (I know it wouldn't happen, 1 cause I'm not selling it but 2 your educated enough to know that because I don't have a title it's worthless to you). You pick it up as an extra for a buddy if he rides with you or for a nephew when he comes to vist?

You take it back to register it or whatever. They tell you you have to title search or whatever. How do you search for a title that never existed in the first place? I know I'm at least the 4th owner possibly more? I know the last 2. 2 owners ago it was a cop, the ex step dad of a best freind and the last owner was a best freind. I'm 99.9% sure this thing is not stolen ever in the past.

Just curious what you do in a case like this, some poor kid in rural NJ buys his "first" ATV used from somewhere and finds this out. Or is just given one by out of state family.

Exactly! They "DON'T" want ATV's nor do they care. Now, here, It's all about the cash cow $$$ ! With your comment I will say this, "most" of us that have unregistered, untitled ATV's ride them anyway in "illegal" spots, quarries, sand pits, electric pole lines through woods, etc... Yes, illegally! But now that ATV is "not" welcome on state land and the DNR/Fish and game/state police, can arrest you and impound your ATV. Yes, it is the most "FU@K@D #P rule in the world and was made law by people who live in pretty houses and in the cities. I bought my one ATV from a retired local cop who told me the Certificate of ownership had been lost by the previous owner, he had plenty of land to ride on so it didn't matter, I'm owner #3. Now, to answer you question on how do you do a title search, you have about 3 papers to fill out, with your name, address, drivers license#, last bill of sale, Make, model , year, color, serial number, CC's and last owner. If you know where the ATV was originally purchased, the dealer info as well. Turn those papers into the DMV and then they do the search through the state police. "IF" it comes back clean and not stolen, then you can "apply" for a lost title, then go through that application. Wait 16 years for a return then pay the fees to get a new title issued to you in your name! Did I cover it? :hair::headbang::headbang::headbang::hair::picard:

Dave that's nuts you need to move! I hope you see I am trying to make a joke... State of VT they were UCC.. a while ago.. been a long time since I bought one.. I have similar experience with a 1967 car.. there has never been a title.. I believe that happened early 70s. I got registration and proof of insurance but no title.. and each year or inspection I calmly explain to them I am not installing seat belts in my antique car.. it did not come with them:headbang:

Of course! :). And I agree with you, I am moving as soon as my retirement is completed and I get loose ends tied up here. Yes, this state is "completely NUTS" ! Yes, I hate it! Vehicles are a "HUGE" cash cow here and ATV's are not worth the money to them so if they make them illegal, then the fines and revenue come in that way. I wanted to register two of mine so I could go out of state with them, some states require you to have them registered and I can't do that here due to the law. *A note to anyone reading this* even if you plan on never coming here, if you can, get your title or certificate of origin, get it because places may start requiring ATV's to be registered. It also protects you incase they are stolen.

Ny is similarly as bad. They force you to register then have very little state land that allows ATVs. It's a money grab.
It's worse when the DMV people don't know what's what and you have to educate them on what forms you(I) need!
I'm waiting on a title search for a trailer to flip. Have cert of origin(documenting owners) bill of sale etc. Pay the fee wait 16 years!

I can't like that. That's a sign of government that's too big and encompassing more than they understand.
