The cutting in Mansfield will involve 7-10,000 tops from the logging operation going on there. It would be a great one to attend for anyone wanting to get involved... Much work to be done there... And the help would be greatly appreciated...
Yee Ha! 7-10,000 tops?! That's a serious task, even for a bunch of guys with ported 50cc saws..... Funny, I hear nothing about such events around here.
Yeah.... Oliver knows this as well... It's all about the splitters and man power at these things... My 562 can cut up those tops in like 45 minutes or so...
Well courtesy of Hedgerow who organized the mini cut for today, the log bucking trailer had a great shake down with logs up to 24-26" dia. I have been very busy this past week & didn't have time to make railing for the ends to keep logs from rolling off the trailer. Overall it did what I set out for it to do, allow logs to be processed into fire wood with a minimal amount of bending over lifting rounds of the ground. We found out with a pile of logs & a good skid loader/tractor operator to keep the bucking rack loaded, one person cutting could keep 3 splitting crews in rounds. Today we had two dedicated horizontal splitters with log lifts & out feed tables in use. In approximately 7 hours the pile of logs was turned into approximately 14 cords of fire wood. The minister was very appreciative. Special thanks to Mrs Hedgerow who prepared lunch for us!
The splits were going into the left bay of the shed so we staged the log bucking trailer & my splitter in front of it. Just to the right of this picture is the main pile of logs. Logs are loaded from this side. As you can see a lot of the wood is not straight & there were several limb with "Y"s. That is Hedgerow taking rounds from the catch tray & loading up the log lift of my splitter. Hedgerow in back & Work Saw Collector with ear muffs. A windy day as you can til from the guy's expressions. Hedgerow & lumberjackchef. Lumberjackchef did the majority of the cutting while the rest of us ran the 2 splitters. He could have kept 3 splitters going thanks to a great skid steer operator who kept him supplied with logs. In the center of the fence on the catch tray you can see a gap around 28" wide. This allows larger rounds to be slid/rolled directly from the catch tray on to the log lift. This enable the young workers to load some really large chunks of wood. A couple of pictures showing the great younger workers helping me split. The splitter in front is Hedgerow's. The aluminum walk board will be replace with a pair of 7' long storage boxes 14-16" high. The fences for the ends will be just for the ramp portion. There will gaps at each end of the catch tray so 3 splitters can be staged around it.

A few shots of trailer in transport mode towed behind the splitter: A clear shot of the catch tray: Opening for log lift. These shot were taken this morning after it maiden voyage. In the last photo if you look at the top of the expanded metal under the first log stand support, you can see where it is bent down a little, the worst damage to the expanded metal. I am pleased with how it is holding up. There were some good sized logs cut on it. For tops like down in Mansfield it will work great. The last couple of logs were cut on the ground. The splitter operator said he didn't think he could have got the one up there if he tried. It probably took the 2 splitters a half an hour just on the last 2 logs.
Really like all you've done and the pics of it all… thanks! And… I'll bet on the road home all that air blast hitting it, and that open space in the framework… makes for a clean trailer when you git home…
