for sure. My general rule of thumb is if wood is between sidewalk and road its free game. Other side of sidewalk, i ask...first tree guys, then owner of property.
Ive spoken with Asplundh bosses here on site. If homeowner wants wood they are told to put a sign up. If no sign then free for anyone. Most of the time i still try and get permission, especially if i need to use saw and park in their driveway.
Wood is gold up your way, not so much down here...unless you're a rabid hoarder :tree:like me!

I see both sides of the argument. There’s a few logs on the road I live on, been there over a year. I’m not gonna snag them up without permission. And it’s not a big enough deal for me to go knocking on doors. Always looking for someone in the driveway tho.
Someone mentioned area specific and that is a big factor. As Brad said if the town or utilities take them down the landowner is supposed to post a sign. Of course I’d always ask permission anyway if it’s in someone’s yard.
When a town or utility take them down it’s considered their wood and their mess to clean up. Towns generally won’t touch a tree unless it’s on their property. They own so much on the side of the road. They also can be very slow in removing the wood and sometimes not at all. I know of some decent logs been sitting three years now.

Another thing I always pay attention too is the house that the wood is near. See a chimney that looks like it burns wood don’t even bother. A stack of wood in the backyard, don’t even bother. I live in a more rural part of Ct so it’s common for people to heat with wood.
As for the state of Ct. screw them. While they do save some wood for their own personal sawmill most of it gets trucked to the incinerator. Costs us money to pick up, truck and more fees to drop free fuel.
There’s also a glut of dead trees in Ct. Towns can’t afford to take them down anymore.

    That's Logan Airport.
    Ha-ha, just kidding.
    Logan's more confusing.
Pretty sure that's an illustration, but there are some interchanges that are even worse inTexas.

They don't want to be dealing with accusations of corruption, nepotism, favoritism nor have to deal with the tree-huggers that want every leaf and branch to become dirt as part of the natural process of Nature. Plus possible insurance and lawsuit problems. It's a LOT easier to just ignore some things. If no one complains nothing happens. If someone does complain they have to be standing on plausible deniability ground. You won't get an answer and not getting an answer is your answer. Don't ask, don't tell rules likely apply. Are there rules somewhere ? Maybe. Are they rules to follow if no one is enforcing them, appropriately and equitably ?

I wasn’t trying to argue. More suggesting people look at the other side of things before they take wood from the side of the road.

    happy hoarding folks

Didn’t mean to imply anyone was. It’s just a saying.

Just to give everyone a tease. This is the state side of the road I hit my big score on after the loggers took whatever they wanted. I got the other side of the road, town property. The town only owns a little ways in. 80 trees they said. I took the trunks and a few big branches.
    Paradise.

You can just go in there and grab what you want? I’d be on the 15 year plan!

No!!! That’s the state side. They won’t let you take it. Asked the forester and he said they may give out permits,,,,while rolling his eyes. As bill said it’s easier to say no than say yes.
I hit the other side of the road,,,,Aug and Sept of 2018. The town side. Town was ecstatic I was snagging up the wood. It’s all about the budget with the town. States don’t care about budgets.
Still have a ton of logs to css from that haul. Even retired life gets in the way sometimes. Starting on the project again tomorrow.

If you guys ever saw what NYS is doing up in Ulster County on the roads surrounding the Ashokan Reservoir I think you’d pass out. They have cut many thousands of ash trees as well as some oak in the past few years. I know a commercial logger on rat 28a that has OVER 5 Thousand cords of ash. Yes I’ve seen it with my own eyes. 5 thousand cords. 1/2 split. 1/2 still in logs. My parents live near there.

    Let that sink in.

Some more locust for Brad. Top broke out of this tree a couple of years ago and was held up by grapevines. I cut all the vines a year ago so they would die. Hooked the chain to it and drug it out today. Almost a full bucket. Topped with a dozen pieces of cherry.

You're the best Steve, much appreciated. Go get more. I wont be able to hoard for a while as im working long days. Two great things about the score im working is it wont be taken or rot anytime soon.
Drive by some big oak logs to and from the job im working on. Ill hafta check them out and maybe bring the 460. They've been there for many months.
