So far I've given away 4 cord from this lot and drug 3 cord home , it has payed off because the friend that I gave and delivered 3 cord to came over on Sunday with his chainsaw and cleared underbrush for about 4 hours to repay the firewood
Got rained out of a scrounge then drove to another on higher ground. The load is ash, sweet gum and scarlet oak. My arms are done for the week.
Got tired of putting a front end in my 04 dodge 2500 w/5.9 cummins every four months. Picked this 89 up. A retired Nascar mechanic rebuilt the motor, and put a spring clutch in also. He wanted to use it as a plow truck, so it has a flat tappet engine, and an whooping extra 1,000ths tolerance. Not the most powerful 350, but more than enough to haul wood. I've decided not to put racks on, as 3/4 cord is enough. I hate to get the bed bent out of whack just yet. I like it. 5 speed standard, vinyl floors, and power nothing. I know this isn't a loaded picture. I cut three loads this weekend, but didn't snap a picture
Nothing wrong with that I was lucky enough to find a old truck something I been wanting for awhile the model didn't matter but a older sqaure body 4x4 and I what I have is a 95 Ford f150 ext cab my opinion easier to work on and alot stronger than a new model
Definitely a stronger truck. I bought a new 96 f150 long bed, and loved that truck. Hauled wood and concrete for miles, and miles compared to the cheap ram.
Basically the cam is different. If you go back some years ago, the roller tappets came out. You get better horsepower, and the tappet does not have to drag across the cam. About 20 years ago, guys were tearing up their engines that were flat tappets, because the oil manufacturing sector had to stop putting goid stuff like zinc in their oils. (EPA). So I need to use 20/50 racing oil with zinc for this truck. The heavy weight for the specs the engine was built to. Doesn't matter really. I will probably have to change oil no more than twice a year.
You gonna put some miles on it then!! My wood hauler gets annual changes, is all. And I just use conventional super tech or what ever oil change I got on special. I usually stock up on black Friday when you buy the 5 qts and filter for about $10
I probably will put some miles on it. I like driving it better than my ram. Plus, another friend of mine, is having hip problems far, far worse than he will admit. Until this morning that is. So I need to go after six more cord ASAP. Since I'm not going to he using a truck that costs 40 bucks a cord in front end work, the plan is to go ahead and get six more for the wife's temporary privacy fence
I've talked to every mechanic I know. Dodge never built the truck around the heavy cummins. Another contractor I know just keeps taking his truck in on routine basis. May be a write off, but what a pain. Ecspecially if you have a custom bed and rack. He loads most of his tools into a tool trailer several times a year. The chevy guys seem to have the best luck these last ten years or so. I've tried moog, and Dyna, but it doesn't matter. They all get sloppy fast
Yeah I know, so why did he use a flat tappet. coulda used a high reving solid roller!adjisting valves while plowing I don't even know where to find zinc oil anymore. Last I checked rotella t?
Why? Money...... truck never intended to leave private ranch property. How much more to set up engine modern? Don't know. I just bought valvoline VR1. Every parts store around here carries oil with zinc additives. Bought the valvoline at walmart. Same price. Lots of old tractors, and rigs I guess.
