I am sure everyone has their preferences but I hauled in some 3 yr hickory this afternoon and I gotta say I am loving it. Been waiting to get to it and the day has finally came ! And timing may be perfect. Calling for a little weather but they are not making a deal if it so it will probably be an apocalyptic event. Would love to be stuck here for a few days by the fire. Anyhow , stay safe and warm everyone!!
I've got nearly a cord of pignut the will soon be 6 years css. I cut it long for a fireplace but soon thereafter I bought an insert and it's too long to fit in the stove. Yes, just call me lazy for not shorting it yet, but it ain't gonna rot anytime soon. Rest assured it will go in the stove next season.
Shoot, I really enjoyed blazing thru 2.4 year old CSS’d american Hickory this past shoulder season. Heck, I burned it into the cold cold weather of Jan. and now I’m out of it. But it was super sweet!
I'm envious of the 3 and 6 year hickory! I've got shagbark that was standing dead that I may or may not burn this year. The moisture isn't ideal but I'm more worried about it getting punky.
I love Hickory too, enjoy your early Christmas. Better than a late Christmas. I may drop a couple of Bitternut Hickories this year, still to be determined.
I cut up a HUGE Shagbark Hickory about 6-7 years ago, it was a monster in the middle of a dense woods, large diameter and tall! Made a pile of wood...it has turned out to be my #1 favorite wood to burn when its polar vortex cold! I'd take it over anything else I've ever burnt, and I've had quite the variety...sad that I'm finally down to the last dozen or so splits
