    Agree that birch will rot here in the round..

    It sounds like the last thing you have to worry about, in your climate, is rounds or quarter rounds being susceptible to moisture. Quarter away, they will dry out faster.

    I would top cover for sure. It will strat to dry from air flow

    This is a big water oak that was cut about 18 months ago, stored on the ground. The sap got a little punky, but I split it off to go in fire pit or burn barrel.
    See how pretty the heart is.
