I just shared this with friends on FB:

"Now that I'm living in a lay community in Massachusetts, I asked the directors here if it was okay if I took a sabbatical early this fall to drive out to California and back to visit my son at his abbey there. And since I'm back on two wheels, I told them I've decided to make this into an epic cross country - and back - motorcycle road trip!

"They thought it was a great idea, especially from the perspective of one of their members who was "paralyzed on the left side from strokes three years ago, has had a miraculous recovery and is making an epic motorcycle journey."

"One of our directors here even suggested making this into a fundraiser for our community, asking our contacts to pledge a cent or two per mile traveled as a donation!

"They're going to let me take a sabbatical for both September (so I can prepare) and October (so I can take a full month to make a leisurely trip given my physical limitations from post stroke fatigue.) Plus whatever days I need for preliminary conditioning trips between now and then.

'I'll probably do a combination of camping and staying at hotels.

    "Let the planning begin!"

So I'm “in training” for a heckuva road trip this fall.

I also picked up an OEM Honda 48 liter top box to complement the Touratech 31 liter panniers and a Givi 10 liter trunk bag for over the bike’s 22 liter “frunk”, a trunk where the gas tank is normally located, for 142 liters of total storage space, same as a mid 2000s Goldwing 0F79DFAC-17D0-49B5-BE53-F6A213BF1E8D.jpeg

Regarding my planned motorcycle trip, a friend said to me,

“I'm glad, Brian, that things are looking up for you. You deserve some light relief, and it's great to have something to look forward to although I'm not a fan of motor bikes. Wouldn't you be safer on the train?”

    I replied:

“I doubt it. I’ve been riding motorcycles since I was about ten years old. I’ve never driven a train ;-) “

I think this C70 went for $778 back then. I paid $1300 LOL! Fine example. They just came out with the new 2019 Honda Supercub. I will get one this year and have both. Research that one a little, gonna be a super nice piece.

I put new skins on Eurotrash, went old school and done ‘em myself, mostly to see if I still could. It went quick and easy.

I forgot to mention it hauled my fat arse 61mph today. And no hand clutch. It is a 4 speed with an auto clutch like the old Honda three wheelers.
