The only winch I have is this one. I keep meaning to mount it on my SXS, but I'm not sure it will have enough power to pull that tree out, especially once the stump end digs into the ground, and the top end may be wedged in once the bottom moves.
stihl kicking You may not want to mount that winch to your SXS to pull on that tree. The weight of the tree may do 'not nice things' to your SXS.
Yeah, a 2500-pound winch will only pull so much and it really depends on the weight of your rig and the mounting point of the winch (I've seen more than one winch fly off a vehicle due to improper mounting). I can't really tell how the top of the leaner is hooked on to the other trees but perhaps you could use a throw line to get a strap up high and then using one or more snatch blocks, increase the pulling power of your winch (as opposed to trying to move the dug-in bottom of the tree). You would probably have to tie the SXS off to a tree or you would just pull it to the leaner. Snatch blocks and mechanical advantage can really help in a situation like this. If you did try it, listen closely to what your SXS is telling you (creaks, groans) and stop before you do any damage. Also keep an eye on the cable (often the first thing that snaps). Still, if the base of the tree is that rotten, there is a good chance you could snap the top of the tree or the branches that are hung up thereby solving your problem.
5500lb winch and multiple sheeves. Granted it had blown over and only half the roots were still in the ground. I did yank two standers out like this with multiple sheeves between the two trunks. Like pulling teeth
It's amazing how snatch blocks increase pulling power. The top of the tree isn't hung up right now, between the base of the leaner and the first tree against it, the top is just hanging there. Once the base goes, the leaner will drop to the right and the top will drop, and will be wedged. I think my best bet is to get a good yank and a pull on the base, and hopefully keep it going till the top drops to the ground. That would probably be about 15 feet of pull. I don't think the SXS and winch I have is robust enough.
Winner winner chicken dinner. I don’t want to come off as a jerk, but the fact that your on here asking how to proceed with it tells me it’s above your pay grade. I haven’t heard but one good answer on here other than pass and the urging of caution. A lot of ways for that to go sideways before you can say boo.
You both have my curiosity up! A neighbor was telling me about his friend had some road hunters spotlighting deer on his property, so he set up a deer decoy with a few Tannerite targets on it, sure enough a couple days later, they heard a loud explosion.
That was entertaining, even if the end of the story could use a rewriting. That would make a great Hoarder Show episode, mostly based on a true story, with a couple artistic changes. I keep finding out there's a lot of old entertaining discussions on here! I'm not ruling my leaner out completely, I'm not going anywhere near Tannerite, and I won't take a saw to it, but if I can get my truck into position using the existing SXS path, I'll definitely give it a yank or two. I've had a lot of experience using my strap and chain. It would be a summer holiday event with dry ground and a few of the guys, before any alcohol. Videoed of course. Meanwhile, I had a package delivered, that I need to go play with.
