Going in the woods with a mower deck on can be a PITA. Some hydro lawn tractors can like to slip backwards on a hill without some power sometimes. I used to prefer my old gear mower with the deck removed for going in the woods, but alas the engine started blowing oil bad and I was too busy at the time to get after it. It sits now sadly.
The path in my woods was cut to let my JD garden tractor thru without getting hung up. I run the mower to keep weeds and small bushes from taking over the path. I also have areas where grass grows in the path and it is nice to keep it knocked down.
Keep the one you have to mow....find another to pull your goodies. Keep your eye on CL ,Facebook Marketplace,Etc. There are pretty descent deals out there. I ended up payin 800.00 for the Kubota thats posted earlier. It came with a mower deck n the blade thats on it now. Sold the deck for 350.00...so thats 450.00 for the tractor. Its a 1987 model n its in very good condition....900hrs.
We would always start haulng in the woods in fall and spring before the grass started growing, and the snowblower attachment wasnt on the front. Tons of clearance with no mower or blower on. Towing a bass boat is no issue for a garden tractor. That said, a 4 wheeler will do all firewood work and hauling anything easier than a tractor.
Sound advice bear 1998 , thanks!!! Good to know on towing a bass boat with a garden tractor! I am leaning 4 wheeler, I can do everything I want to do with it plus have a little fun with it as well. I promised I wouldn't buy anything until I have a sheltered home for it.
I’ve got a cub cadet 102 that I use some. If you’re looking for something garden tractor sized a powerking is the way to go. Also as I’m sure people have said is a farmall cub or Allis chalmers b or something like that.
View attachment 196042 View attachment 196046 View attachment 196047 Got the green one running this afternoon. Was thrilled to hear it turn over. I expected it to die, but it just kept running! I couldn’t get it to even cough when I messed around with it the other day. Today I got a strong battery hooked up to it verified I had spark, but still nothing. Gas smelled ok, but it wasn’t firing, so I opened the carb bowl and a bunch of fuel poured out. I gave it a shot of ether to see if I could get anything and it fired right up and just kept running. Throttle response is good. That’s all I had time for today. And it’s back to winter tomorrow. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk[/QUOTE] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
So I’ve been away from my thread for a while. In the meantime I’ve managed to acquire a third tractor. A friend at work essentially gave it to me. It’s about a 10 year old or less Cub Cadet with the bagger and a plow attachment. I was told it needs some TLC; I think it needs its drive belts replaced and a good cleaning and it should be good to go. It stops when going up a hill, but the moment you lift off the gas and reapply it starts moving again. The red tractor needs a little bit of work on the steering box gear and a carb cleaning and that should be good to go. And also a starter solenoid that was good and then just went bad without warning. And the green tractor just needs a fuel pump rebuild I think. And then it should be good to go. I think that’s the one I will keep for a pole in the wood car around the yard and I will sell the others. Looking forward to getting the extra tractors out of the yard. Not really a lot of room for stuff like this in our suburban lot. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Screwloose Do you have a close up pic of the front mounted ball on your tractor that you could share? Thanks
I had this one on my phone. I just cut a mount out of a chunk of channel and bolted it to the mower deck mount.
That’s a nice looking tractor! Thanks for sharing. Ideally that is more like something I would like to end up with. There is a really nice looking Gilson I’ve had my eye on on Craigslist. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Picked this up in Feb. and been getting snow ever since. 2 blowers and 38" deck. Seems to be running well.
