Front loader machine here. This seems to work okay. Not great. But good enough. The wife has some tricks up her sleeve, but I don't know them. I may be more along the caveman line as well. Dat was a good one HittinSteel!
Ever since they pulled the phosphates out of the detergents none of works very well with out help. Weather it was my old conventional washer or my new top load HE unit. ( most of the savings there is lower use of water and high speed spin- negated by the cost and that it will likely not last 25 years like the old one) I just pretreat the bad spots with what ever detergent I have on hand thinned down with water in a spray bottle and some agitation with a soft brush. Tried the specific HE detergent no difference cleaning wise cost is twice as much for half as much. A 1/4 cup of cleaner/degreaser does more for me than anything else in conjunction with the other detergent. ( got hard water- so that cleaner /degreaser resolves that difficulty).
We noticed a huge decline is our dishwasher detergent when they took out the phosphates, we thought it was our dishwasher at first!
Some brands do better than others as they have something on the order of pumice or glass beads in it. Those can create other problems down the line though.
We recently found a close out sale on some Finish, so I snatched it up (as we know that and Cascade are the two that actually seems to work). We will be set for a few months.
I also read that the levels of phosphate in the rivers did not decrease, which was the point in removing the phosphates in the first place.
lakes and rivers - Blaming the over abundant aquatic plant growth on it- besides other things- lastest thing was/is micro glass beads in various skin care products building up in the lakes and such- how the .... they can tell the difference between that and other types of extremely fine silica blowing in the wind- someone spent an awful lot of time and money on that research- positive or negative has yet to be proved, but the EPA says so and tossed a mandate out there that says they have be removed from the products. Kinda like the two stroke issue. I' d love to take a couple dozen of these know it alls and load them down with four stroke equipment for 48 hours, let the wailing begin.
Update. For loads that need prewash I run a "quick cycle" with liquid detergent, then a separate "normal" cycle with a pod. The pods smell fantastic! I've hurt my fingers everytime I open the pods container, but it's even better assurance to me that god forbid she got ahole of the container the lil one could not get it open.
I ran a "self clean" cycle for the drum on the front loader today. I understood from the user manual to turn on, press "clean cycle" and it would run for ~ 1/2 hour. I think I have been doing it wrong for 2.5 years this time I set it normal wash, then pressed the clean setting.......... It ran 2 hours and hotter than before. There were suds in the drum though I had not added any soap. Wow, kinda gross. Tip for others that may be new appliances challenged
MasterMech , does she make dishwasher detergent too, or just clothes washer detergent? I'd be interested in her dishwasher recipe if she does. Thanks
We switched back to store-bought about the time we moved south. I don't think she ever made dishwasher detergent.
