This exactly why my detergent odyssey began! In my old top loader I used a wooden spoon in the lid latch and could add whatever in any of the cycles while it ran. My new one is a front loader. With 2 dogs, a lil one, and living in the country I use prewash most of the time. If I add liquid to both wash and prewash they both drain down immediately. Logicially I knew prewash would not work with pods even before reading your link. What gives?
Those little candy "pods" are really sour. The purple one's are a little better though. They also make me poop funny.
Years ago I used to go to a laundry mat for my king size bed comforters, the giant front loader could handle 2 comforters in one wash and the large dryers dried them fast. The water dishcharge for the giant washers was visible, (hallway to an office). I too was amazed the dishcharge water was that dirty.
We use (or should I say, I use) pods and a bit of borax in each load. I don't seem to be as picky when it comes to my clothes ( construction ) but I pay more attention to my wife's.
Do you prewash? Is that where the borax is added? PS, I am not picky either, just want clean clothes at decent price.
I hope you didn't take that the wrong way, didn't mean to say you are picky when doing laundry. It was more about me doing the least amount of work for good results. It's not my favorite chore. I only prewash with prewash spray, like "spray n wash". And that would be for my wife's clothes, mine are what they are.
I add it just as I'm loading it and the water is filling. I also don't have a HE machine if that makes a difference.
We do the exactly the same. Can't remember the cost breakdown is but it is quite cheaper to make your own and I think the clothes turn out cleaner. The last HE set we bought were told not to use any liquid detergent as it contains animal fats that will build up inside the drum and make the laundry smell.
I'm pretty sure "detergent" means there's no fats. Meaning that actual soap is made with animal fats, but detergent is a chemically produced cleanser. Liquid fabric softeners on the other hand, do contain animal fats.
One night husband and I needed to discuss something, earlier in the day I had spilled some coffee grounds and while I went to fetch the vacuum my lil did some finger painting in the grounds. So that night, I put some coffe in a baking dish to distract lil one for hopefully 5 minutes of conversation. She turned around and coffee grounds on her face and mouth
We use washing soda, and whatever Bar soap we have on hand. I think my current batch is soda, zote, and chandrika. I ditched the borax. (Old style washing machine.) Wife was very skeptical. But she approves.
Bought my wife a food processor at her request. She never uses it for food. She switched to homemade detergent (with borax) a while back, no complaints.
I was given a coffee bean grinder for Christmas years ago. He has never used it for anything other than spices for cooking
