Just 13 beef yearlings this year. We ran 10-12 cows and their yearlings for many years, but sold them last fall to a friend. These are his yearlings, just summering here.

The only non farm 'chore' mine do is lifting the zero turn mowers up to change the blades and clean the decks off in the fall. I do occasionally get lazy and lift the back or front of a vehicle with them and then place jack stands. beats using a floor jack. Too big to be driving around the yard anyway. Made a mistake years ago and drove over the septic tank and promptly broke the lid.

Sold the entire herd last spring (a year ago). No more animals here except the dog and numerous cats that all pee on my tires.

depends on the size of the yard, and what needs to get done.

My philosophy about yards is the smaller, the better. Less yard means more hay ground means more income. Mowing grass always puts me in mind of owning a boat. A boat is a hole in the water you pour money into and a lawn is a patch of grass you also pour money into in the form of gas for the mower and sometimes high buck fertilizer too. I never intentionally fertilize the grass. It might get a bit of 46 when I fertilize a hayfield, but it's purely an accident.

I own 3 rentals all next to the farm and they all abut my hayfield and over the years, I've intentionally shrunk the back yards for more hay ground.

Of course right now it's all pismuckle brown from lack of rain and from my lovely wife scalping them Her philosophy is, gas is expensive so cut it real short so she don't have to mow except once every 2 weeks. Works for me as I buy the mower gas.

I was giving very serious consideration to buying one of those new battery powered zero turn mowers (Ego or Ryobi) and selling my gas powered 60" pig but been reading they are having teething issues with them so maybe next year. They are both supposedly good for about 3.5 acres on a full charge. The Ego uses conventional 'oars' like a regular zero turn while the Ryobi uses a single joystick mounted on the right side. No belts, no drive issues, each rear wheel has an electric motor and each blade (3 of them) has it's own variable speed motor. No gas, no oil no winterizing either plus the packs interchange with their other cordless tools.

I always enjoyed playing in the sand box….

Moving some sandy loam/topsoil and using it to level off an area I filled in with stone/debris. The county was grading the side of our road and another close by. So I stopped and asked them if I could get some of it. Showed them my landing which has a nice apron with culvert I payed the county to put in a few years back. They ended up dumping me 11 full ten wheeler loads because I was a close spot for them! Can’t beat free fill!

Sometimes I feel like I'm never getting a tractor. :headbang:

A couple years back when the wuhan virus began, some people felt that maybe people would be dumping their tractors.

    Ha!

I have the Kubota L3301 with some modifications and a 64 Ford 2000.
Though I drive them alone on our place, I find myself wanting another tractor occasionally.

To me, they seem the modern day version of a farmer’s ox, cowboy’s horse, or a prospector’s mule.
Can’t see working alone without a tractor helping.
Today was moving an accumulated big pile of rocks out of the way for my new concrete pad starting this week. And the ford used to water the far garden via tank and pump on the back of it.

Building trails for walking/Rhino/skis. Wife gets this from her work, at an hourly rate.

I think I have less flat ground to contend with than you do, but also more rock. I’ve got wider roads reaching into some of the woods - these trails are intentionally narrower (not sure my cabbed tractor will be going on them). Gasifier , are you building to withstand horse traffic? I would need to dig down to mineral soil everywhere for that sort of use.

Yes. Our trails through the woods are for horse, ATV, and foot traffic. Too hot and too many bugs for foot traffic right now though. This area I’m finishing off is for grazing pasture and maybe a little working them to keep them in shape. I think I’m going to put some extra topsoil on top of this sandy loam to give a little more depth/cushion on top of the stuff underneath. I pulled up all rocks and sticks/roots on the surface and put them over the back edge before I put this sandy stuff down. And I’m going to tell them to keep the horses off of it when it’s wet. Not the best base under it and horses hoofs can go deep if too soft.
