Home made Ravs Gears looked good Dave, despite the grease that leaked out there was still alot of grease in there, guess I had talked myself into that it was the gear grease over the last couple years. Nope. Its the motor it appears we almost burned it out, the part that's wrapped in the copper wire to the right of pic, it smells like hot metal even when its not under a load, I think we just ran it too long in extremely tough dough a few years ago during a ravioli making marathon weekend and overheated it beyond repair... OK, it smells like when you push a cheap drill too hard and you know its bad for it but you just really want finish your project and keep going anyway
Thanks Bud, I am in a small town, only Kmart, hole in the wall Sears, and Walmart and Ace. Thank God Walmart has one in stock. Normally I could get a better deal and have one shipped here but we need it tomorrow, too late to wait for delivery. This new black one was $200. Different model, but holy cow, WAAAY less than we paid for the burned out gray one so many years ago.
Thread is just in time... My other half was mumbling about her Kitchen Aide was acting up last weekend. Was blaming me for storing it down stairs... I guess Too many trips up and down... Maybe it just needs some grease... Thanks! and Good luck on the Ravioli's... Dont forget...
If you overheated the motor you'd get a pungent burnt varnish odor.. Wondering if the motor bearings\bushings need lube? These are great mixers and worth every penny!
The walmart kitchenaid is the classic , a weaker, cheaper version, good for small batches of dough every so often . If you are going to do real mixing very often , you need the artisan series, it has a heavier motor . Save your money for the good one or buy the cheap one more than once . I found the best price on a refurbished artisan on amazon.
