I am guessing all the black on the walls is mastic from previous tile work. Do yourself a favor and cut it out and replace it rather than trying to fix it, you will save a lot of time and aggravation In the long run. cut it out 6 inches higher and lower, then the seams will be behind the cabinets. Also depending on the tile you might be better of with Duroc on the walls too.
Any idea what the vinyl tile is underneath? I have similar in the bedroom that will be demo'd this summer. Precautions for asbestos?
9x9 square or 12x12 square??? that is what the manufacturers changed, the size, so you can look at them and tell. Most of the time, there are few occasions 12x12 are positive. The mastic underneath also contains asbestos. What color is it?
Yep that's mastic. The mastic on the right will be behind the pantry and not a problem. Any other mastic seen is basically residue from where it was scraped off. Walls are 3/4" plaster on wall board and tile will adhere to them very well. All voids and seams are filled or skimmed with setting type joint compound. I've set more tile in this house than I care to remember. Got the 20 minute joint compound this time and they ain't kidding about it setting up in 20 minutes.
You have an incredible eye! Mine are 9x9. I am almost certain the mastic is black (painted over it a year ago).
There were 2 layers of square vinyl tile and ceramic tile on top of that, glued down with liquid nails or some kind of mastic. The first tile was put down in '56, so I may be entitled to substantial financial compensation.
I don't know a single cabinet shop that makes standard cabinets anymore, they all order them in from various RTA places, all cnc machined and can come prefinished or naked. Something you can do your self and cutout the middle man. These are solid wood or plywood where acceptable. The only time they make a cabinet from scratch is a speciality one. I have talked to several of my customers( cabinet shops) and the refrain is the same. Same for jobs just doing door and drawer replacement to freshen up. Now a build on sight face frame install is different ball of wax. I have my kitchen about 1/2 done ( keep running out of cash) Looked at all the various tops went with granite. Dang near impervious to almost anything, vs any of the man made conglomerations. I even researched the poured/ polished concrete tops ( cost more than granite). All in all I am very happy with the granite- glad I went that way vs a few bucks less on some other materials. Particle board has no place in a kitchen except as a backer for the center portion of stile & rail doors although plywood is fine there also ( either doesn't move so much with humidity swings), a well made cabinet door with insets will have buffers in the slots to account for humidity expansion and contraction.
funny thing is I remove asbestos and another family member Atty provides the compensation. talk about an interesting dynamic.
We considered getting a fridge with a water dispenser, but when I tried to find specs on the filters they use, I found nothing. I decided to put an extra fitting on the cold water supply line and after the kitchen's done, I'll install a faucet with an under sink reverse osmosis filter. The extra cost a fridge with a water and ice dispenser would have run should almost pay for the whole setup and I figure the water will be about as pure as I can get it.
Good idea. We don't use the frig water disp now after changing the filter twice, and finally realizing we were using the kitchen sink most of the time anyway. The frig was here when we bought the place. I wouldn't pay extra for water now either.
