Now this is a good idea; there is plenty of stuff in the woods; just need to pick it up, let it dry out, and store in a container from the weather. And I love to walk in the woods so it is a win win situation.

I have done this as well; it is a bit slow but it does the job.

campinspecter bought a small electric splitter from Home Depot for Mom to use to make kindling. She uses it all the time. It is slow but a lot safer than a hatchet. We mounted it on a wooden table for her so she is not all bent over to use it.

He was way too "long winded" for me.
    Lost interest after a minute.

I tried the maul on a block today to make kindling. I think the little electric splitter is the better way. What I need to do is like HDRock said and limit the return so I don't have to wait for the travel of the ram. I think it will be faster than the maul and hammer.

I'd say a 20 oz. hammer would treat your arm and wrist a little better than the lump hammer... what does it weigh, 2-4 lbs?

I have three different sizes of the one you saw in the photo; that one is the largest and is five pounds I think; I would have to check to be sure.

My point Kimmie, is that you don't need that much weight swinging around to bust kindling....
