My stepfather is 67 but can outwork many 40 years his junior. He asked me if I'd be interested in several large boxes of extra pieces of red oak untreated floor scraps from his last floor job. Of course I said YES! So I've been using fatwood the last couple years, but now I add these beauties to the mix: Anyone else trying anything new this year??
Maybe he could let you know whenever a new flooring job comes up, so you can be ready for the next load? You could actually have a decent fire with that stuff.
That's a nice catch. That stuff burns great and lasts a good while to get the bigger logs going. I find that kiln dried wood is best for kindling. This years kindling is the knotty pine wainscoting that I tore out of the dining room last winter, it's over 50 yrs old and lights right up. If I don't have any scrap on hand, I keep an eye out on garbage day for scrap wood being thrown out. If I find a set of old kitchen chairs, I take them apart and cut them up on the miter saw. 4 chairs can make a lot of kindling. I try to not spend money on anything that goes into the stove...besides matches.
