That's how I do it, but I use my fireside friend, I don't swing it unless I'm starting out with a good size chunk, I don't hold on to it

That is exactly how I was making kindling except without gloves when I almost took my finger off. Just on that getting it started something went wrong.

Almost as scary but, as long as you can still play the flute you're good:D

Are you sure you have enough there; might want to cut some more.

This is good; helping others. When I was splitting the locust it splintered a lot so I gather all the splinters to use for kindling.

I do the same , I pick up all my splitter trash and might split up a few of the short blocks but I don't use much kindling during the winter .
I have more than enough wood so it doesn't bother me to split up a couple of feed bags worth of kindling and give it to someone that can use it .

You and I think alike, I have one about 3 years old, and today I just bought another one to keep on the ATV. The only place I've seen them around here is Home Depot. The Fireside friend is a "great tool"!

I need something better than my axe. Last winter I would start with a large piece of wood and I would split it a few times but then came the issue of the small pieces not wanted to stand upright. So this year I need to think about a splitting block for kindling and something smaller than an axe.

It is a great tool , I like it a lot , It's surprising what you can do with it .
Funny I keep mine Fireside by the stove , if I need it I know right where it is , I use it all winter too, if need to make some smaller splits or more kindling.
Hay ! I'm jealous , mine didn't come with a cover :( Got mine at Home Depot about 2 1/2 yrs ago

Get ya a nice oak or some hard wood round, maybe 16" or so. I go to as many contractors dumpsters and ask them if I can take their cut off's of 2x4's and 2x6's etc... Usually they'll give me all I want. Thats what I use for kindling, and I have the Fireside friend for splitting. I'ts a gem for that! :).

Neither did my first one and second. If you order it on-line it does! I had mine delievered to the store and picked it up. To go back to my original one, I left it in the woods somewhere many years back camping and :drunk::cheers:

Here's the one I keep near Grandma also! Yup, mine is also close, and a Corgi also from time to time! If he thinks I'm splitting, it's play time! Didn't take him a second when I picked it up!

I've got the little Fiskars X7 but for kindling I actually prefer my big bowie knife. And seems to be much safer with the knife method - just laying it on the piece to hold it upright (don't have to worry about it falling over) then just tapping it through with another piece of wood.

I'd like to have one of these on the wall when I get my sugar shack built: splitter.jpg

Although the price tag makes me want to make my own like this: wood splitter.jpg

I just fill up the tire with splits of cordwood and whack the living crap out of them, fill a garbage bin and put it on the screen porch out back. The torch lights em up good. By the way i love this site, So glad I found it! My name is Chris and I am a woodwhore
