Another FB marketplace score. Tons of wood on there but I’m only interested in one kind at the moment.
Hot hot hot. 90 in the shade according to the truck. By the time I loaded this up I had to wrap my hands with a t-shirt to put the tailgate back on. That’s hot
Could have stuffed a little more on there, too hot. I need to build some rails for this trailer to up the ante a bit.

I’ve only burned a few scraps last year. I’m hoarding on reputation LOL. Better measure up.

Anyone have an idea what that maple is in the pic? Looks like sugar to me but,,,,,,,,

 

My best guess is red maple. The dark heartwood is usually what gives it away. I happen to like that stuff a lot so if I make it there in a couple hours, I'll grab some of that as well. It'll be a nice addition to the sugar maple I got this morning.

 

There’s some nice easy splittin rounds of that left. Go get em!!

 

We're in the same boat. I haven't even burned it in the stove yet, and only became aware of it through this forum a few months ago. A few weeks back I burned some of the less desirable pieces of locust I had in the outdoor pit. I had a big pile of green brush to burn and I wanted something in the coal bed to really crank out the heat and incinerate the brush. It definitely delivered!

 

Thanks for the heads up jo191145 ! Unfortunately I could only grab a few pieces since I already scored some sugar maple earlier today and ran out of room in the truck. There’s some big pieces there! I’ll bet that winch setup came in handy.

I’m thinking so. Bring a ramp, a sledgehammer, wedge and maul next time. Pieces like that are too heavy for this short guy!

Hard to tell but bark looks like sugar maple to me as well.

 

I didn’t get a definitive ID on it. Once I saw the locust I started salivating and all bets were off. Nuclear bombs could’ve been going off all around me and all I would’ve been fixated on was that highly prized dense yellow wood

 

Ya I hear ya. I see some locust on a picture on FB and I’m off like a shot

 

Hopefully it lives up to your expectations...it didn't for me...I mean don't get me wrong, its great firewood, it just didn't live up to all the hype I had heard...none of the locust varieties have. But I did notice it works better mixed with other woods, as someone mentioned.
The one that impressed me the most was Shag Hickory.
Nice score those guys...sounds like in that area, if you aren't part of FHC, its gotta be tough finding any decent free wood!

 

Did they advertise locust or just “wood”? I saw a TON of locust trees in that area along the river. I’m almost never back there so I had no idea. That whole area was underwater in the flood of 1955, with huge swaths of that section of town swept away. I’m guessing all those trees popped up after that? The army corps of engineers did some serious work restructuring that section to reinforce the river banks.
