So I was trying to copy and paste the exact portion of the license that everyone is up in arms about, but it will not allow me to copy text from the PDF. If you follow this link, read #4 and #5 and tell me what you think.

Basically by buying and signing you agree not to use, make, or buy third party scanners or software or chips ect.

It looks like many other software licenses, so it really depends on how much effort JD puts into finding and prosecuting hackers and users. It could end up like prohibition where everybodies doing it, or the farm states void the license. Either way I can't see JD getting away with this for long, and if JD caves, everybody caves.

Number 23 of the agreement says 3rd party liscence is available........ So other companies can make something, liscence it and sell it?......

Yeah I've read the agreement. It's no different than most software agreements or other liscence agreements.
It's like jailbreaking an I phone.
Again, when you buy are they holding a gun to your head and saying sign this? No
Are the purchasees actually even signing an agreement? I don't think so.

The only cases where I've seen aftermarket or third parties loose is when they do copy without permission or like this case of not working around the legal precedent. Or when the federal government gets its feelings hurt and wants some money.

This case when settled will set a new precedent as well.
It is important to protect patent rights.

Like I said China will have a copy out as long as they dance around the copyright law as long as the demand is there.

The precedent is there for sure with the early 90s auto industry and OBDII. Unless things have changed, Deere is even using the same communication protocol between controllers (CAN) that the autos are using.

Patent rights and Intellectual property are one thing, forcing end users to spend big $$ to unlock OEM spare parts via a dealer service department is quite another. Of course it's all in the name of covering some green posterior against emissions system modifications that could cause the engines to run off-spec but that's a rather thin disguise for artificially pumping up the most profitable side of dealerships.

The John Deere 9770 combine was run by CANBUS with 7 controllers and I understand that the latest S series is CANBUS too.

The last tractor I touched was an 8230, all CANBUS, nearly 30 different controllers yakking.
