You know we will. Something I noticed right away, and the photo doesn't do it justice: the coffee pellets are tiny. Not just short, but they are also very small diameter. I would say about half that of regular wood pellets. Think these will need to be run on a very low feed rate, and expect many will be destined for the fines box simply because of their size. This will be a fun experiment.
I suppose it could, but if you only clean it yearly, I wouldn't think adding another time or two would be a hardship. I usually do the fines box every time I clean my stoves (about every 3-4 weeks during full burn season). But the P43's fines box doesn't fill up as much as the P61a's, so I could probably go every other cleaning (or more) if I wanted to. I've burned some pretty short pellets before and I don't remember them having a detrimental effect in cleaning. But those were normal diameter- and my memory isn't that great so if it didn't cause me any harm outside my regular cleaning, it wouldn't stand out to me. But yeah, the smaller the pellets the lower I set the feed rate.
Got it. See if I find any to try. Have burned some pretty short pellets before, but the different diameter is a interesting twist !
Just thinking here, so these pellets are very short, smaller diameter, and roughly 40% more btu's. Might we have a risk that you can over fire the stove if running a high burn rate?
I would think so. I am gonna try them on low and turn the feed rate down as much as I can for the first burn.
I was thinking the same thing. Like IHP said, I also plan to run these on a very low feed rate initially, and see where it goes from there.
Not yet, heating season is just beginning here, we lit the stoves for the first time this morning. Those Java Flame pellets are supposed to be high octane, so I prob won't burn them until it gets a bit colder. Will definitely report thoughts back here after burning some. They do smell like coffee.
Started to burn these a little bit a week or so ago. I mixed them roughly 50/50 with Matra and the stove was burning HOT! I think being so small they feed a lot more per auger turn. May keep them mixed at all times. Stay tuned.
Java pellets for $400/ton at 11,000 BTU is more BTU per dollar than Douglas Fir for $500/ton at 9200 BTU. Does anyone know of a seller in New England?
They were part of a sample order brought in to Royal Fireside. Thanks to ttdberg for letting me in on it. We went halfsies on a ton.
Just catching up on these. Pretty interesting stuff! We( imacman -chris kent and schoondog ) made some along with the timothy grass pellets some years back. There was a place planing on producing them, But it went silent for a bit. Good to see them being produced, but man the price!! Wow!! Bringing back some memories of years gone bye! schoondog used to keep in touch with the grass pellet maker and burned some for a while. Not sure if that guy is still amking the grass pellets. He was getting into biochar pellets which seemed promising too! That test led me to try all sortes of other pellets(leaf-switch grass-brewers grains-cherry pits-olive pits-ect). I found a guy in old saybrook that had a small mill and he was making test samples to try. Poop was even on the menu. Horse-cow-lama all were tried. My wife had 3 bunnies at the time and we we saving their droppings to test. Sun dried on racks and straight to the stove. Bamboo pellets were the most promising, Even saw a place that advertised them just seemed to fizzle out when oil prices dropped. Bamboo grows so fast and ash/btu were very simial to wood pellets!
The supreme DF pellets are 8800 BTU, according to the bag. The java flame pellets are 11,170 BTU. So yeah.
