NH mountain man Ha Ha right after I posted this I read your post in another thread- "I keep thinking about wood, it's a primal urge that I need to get wood. Going on close to 40 years. kinda like birds knowing it is time to migrate. It sounds silly" So True -- there are a lot of us here with the same primal urge
Nice posting. I think I'm going to cry. ~trying to coke back a tear~ We'll stated and the truth!! Sent from my SM-T280 using Tapatalk
On the lighter side I've got a lot of wood, still over 50 cord. In the summer I was out puttering around and waiting for a delivery. Guy comes walking up the Driveway. Not my delivery. It was the fuel oil delivery guy. He saw my stacks from the neighbors house where he was filling and wanted to buy firewood from me. This was my 5 year old oak all stacked. Didn't sell
Mike, that's great when the fuel oil guy wants to buy firewood! And to be sure, you are way ahead of me on the firewood! I'm guessing with the price of gas and diesel going up that heating oil has too. That will make some scream.
That's a good story - oil delivery guy wanting to buy wood. I would not have sold him any either, unless I knew him as a friend. I then would have directed him to this site so that he might learn and appreciate the effort that goes into having stacks of wood to burn. The oil delivery is probably just a job to him, and he's wanting, like us, to save a few $'s Sent from my SM-T280 using Tapatalk
Same here. I feel that it is ME sustaining my family and not having to worry about the power company to keep us alive. If we lose power at 3am and it’s 2* we will survive because of me. I’ve also learned a lot from many many guys in here so I won’t add to your list but they are all also on mine and especially my neighbor, Eric VW. He has helped me a lot as well. I love the fact that I shut off my heat pump days ago and the power man can get over it. Plus it’s better heat. I’m learning but safety is key for me and i am a little Leary of running it hot but it’s getting easier. Thanks to all these guys.
MikeInMa I spent quite a bit of time with the fuel guy. He was the owner of a small company with a handful of trucks. He was only burning in fireplace and complained about guys selling him wood, they said was aged and when he went to burn it was green and wet. Showed him my stacks, told him about 3 yr plan, moisture meters and this forum. Nice chat. Had a good chuckle when he left. Oil guy wanting to buy firewood!
Backwoods Savage I am way ahead on wood thanks in part to your advice. It just fell in place with everything I knew and just plain made sense. Whenever anyone sees my stacks the always ask if the wood will rot before I use it. Well it's covered, off the ground and almost all oak. No it won't rot! The price of fuel oil peaked here about 6 yrs ago when there was speculation in the market and it drove the price up to over $4.00 per gallon. Thank goodness I was heating with wood. I have oil heat for backup but only use it to heat hot water. A 275 gallon tank lasts me about 3 years.
Thanks Mike. Perhaps that price will be peaking soon by the sounds of things. But then, we knew this would be coming sooner or later and personally, I enjoyed the lower prices while they were here and they stayed a lot longer than I thought they would. Now one wonders if the car manufactures will once again stress how much fuel economy the cars get. That used to be a big selling point but was somehow put on the back burner.
CHeath couldn't agree more. It's a great feeling. To most no power means no heat. I have 2small fans that help distribute heat and that's all I would miss as far as heat. Wish I had some neighbors close that thought the same. Great for you as far as that goes. I share wood with my kids and next door neighbor. Son in law is a firefighter in NYC and will stop on the way home and we load his pickup with wood.
Backwoods Savage I read a lot of speculation about when to stop buying gas cars. Seems like won't be too long before all mfrs are making electric cars. Kind of like the change from horses to cars. We'll see...
That could be interesting for sure Mike. I've thought about getting another car but perhaps better to hold off a bit longer.
Thought I would update this thread with some new info. I've continued using pallet rack sheds and they've worked out great. As I'm using my firewood stacked under my large hot tub pallet roofs (8'x8'), I keep adding cribbing to hold up the roof . Since I have extra pallet racks and beams I decided to make a permanent structure under the movable roofs. Some of the 8x8 roofs I even replaced with metal roofing and that has worked out great but expensive. I'm gonna try some billboard tarp for a roof since I can't find used metal roofing or discarded rubber roofing. Funny how as space opened up I kept filling the new space with stuff. Mower, splitter old grill , another mower, leaf sweeper etc. This year as I used up wood I left the space empty so I could make metal racking uprights to support metal interlocking beams to hold up the roof. I ended up with 5 pallet rack bays in this section. I started with the portable shed as bay 1 measuring 8' deep and 11' long. I could easily attach beams to it and was very stable to hook on to. In the picture showing the 5 bays the starting shed (bay 1) is all the way to the right. I didn't want to remove the roofs so I jacked them up and put in temporary supports. Over the last week I added 3 11' bays 8' deep and the last one is 8' .
here's a pic of what it looked like before with 3 8' roofs sitting on top of splits. This area would turn into an 8' and two 11' bays
Just went through this thread, most excellent from start to this point mikeward (I refuse to say end) I for one am glad you have continued to post your progression.. I really like the bays you've setup. But as they say, we make room to store things, then we fill them up, needing yet more room for storage.
