Great looking stoves. Awful design when it comes to how they are built and how they function. It is a shame.
I agree with ALL of that! One thing that struck me early last fall when I showed up on the forums to find a stove for my house, was how old looking MOST of the stove designs looked, lots of "Victorian" style type stuff, and very few modern looking stoves. And the few modern looking stoves, are almost only ornamental and not serious heaters like the hanging Orb thingy I posted recently. They all tend to be tall and thin for up/down type loading (not E/W or N/S). That's one of the reasons I ended up with the PH, it's one of the most "modern" looking designs that is still functional and soapstone. I'd like to see Woodstock make and even more modern looking version of the PH, like polished stainless steel trim instead of the Cast iron, more modern looking andirons and legs...
Oldhippi, is that yours? Cool tile! Looks VERY close to the rear? What is going on at the pipe connection to collar? Is there a puddy or something around it to seal it?
Just get some bricks and make your own...check out the pictures! When you have stove made from a ton and a half of rocks, you do not have to constantly maintain a fire. The stove is burned super hot and the mass stores the heat and moderates the output. http://www.mha-net.org/html/gallery.htm
Looks great, great idea, undeniably efficient design, but I'd have to rebuild my house to support it. Most homes can't support the weight of a masonry stove and my living room isn't big enough to accommodate one.
Some of those are UN-BELIEVABLE! You should have warned us before clicking the link, that is X rated!!!!!!!!!!! WOW! My dream is to build my own custom modern Log home, with one of those right smack in the middle of it!
These stoves are not for everybody, and I am not knocking steel/cast iron stoves. I have had plenty of them starting with a cheap 'franklin', then one I made with baffles from 2' gasline pipe, and finely a lopi. Also built an outdoor stove for the folks out of gasline pipe that took 4' logs up to 19" in diameter and tied into the furnace. It is interesting however that in Finland, 95% of all new homes have a masonry stove installed, so apparently, there are ways around the support and size issues.
That is my family/basement stove. I bought it used from a neighbor a few years ago. I used to have a small CDW there that I bought in about 1985.It was one of the very first stoves that had a CAT. This was prior to them getting bought out by VC. But it finally gave up the ghost and I found this one a few doors down. They bought it for their Log Cabin and then found out that burning wood was way more work than they ever bargained for. It's a much deeper stove that what was there previously, hence tight. It is tight behind it and on that left side. But the tile has duarock behind it and then the cement block chimney behind that, no flameable surfaces, and I have a heat shield above it and the tile extends out on both sides for the right clearances on the floor. I"ve monitored the temps when it was blazing and it doesn't hit 100, I can easily put my hand on it. The pipe connection is stove putty because the stupid VC collar uses a braided gasket (instead of just using a 6"ID and I had a nice clean fit there and then when I cleaned the chimney last time the gasket fell apart so used stove putting and a generic gasket to seal it. I know it looks lousy but it's air tight. But I know it doesn't meet the specs in the stove manual. I really should do a couple of heat shields there. I'm not calling the insurance company on myself. I replaced the combustor in it and pretty much took it completely apart and rebuilt it, a couple year ago.. and it is a really pretty nice heater for the occasional use, but I'll never take it apart again.
If a tree falls in the forrest... ...which FHC member heard it when he dropped it... ...and how many beers did he drink before he uploaded his YouTube videos ... ...and "27 8×10 color glossy pictures with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one" ... ...when he hijacked yet another thread... ....to brag about it?
Cheers to a rainy night in da Burgh! (I am not in da Burgh but I need a reason to catch up. You all got a good head start on my last night.) Starting off with Apple Martinis...
Speaking of DaBurgh, how the HELL did the Jack Assparagus from San Diego miss that [insert F bomb here]'in field goal!! DANG IT!!!
