Today was my New Years day off. So back at it.
Somewhere in this mess is a black cherry

Made pretty quick work out of it

While bucking the black cherry I saw an old BL branch. Looked around and found what was left of the tree. Of course half of it was buried in thorns. I cut some and was able to go on the trail and pull the rest out. 20230102_095134.jpg
I know the log looks like it's not worth much but you never judge a BL log until you cut into it. 20230102_095748.jpg
Saved this section for some crafty porch project to make the wife happy. 20230102_095657.jpg

Started to sort out the mess. Looking for viable logs. Some more BL ontop of a cherry. 20230102_103849.jpg

    Wonder what it could be?

    BL gold!
Well fools gold only about 8' was good. :(

However there was another mystery log on top. It's either BL or BC. (What a mess with the stinking vines and thorns)

    Cut into it and...
    20230102_130848.jpg
    Some solid BL
Followed it until it was being devoured by thorn bushes.

Cut up some other BC as well. Rounds look like garbage on outside but heartwood is still good. Started to rain, out of bar oil, cart tire is shot and chain needed sharpened, so I called it a day.
    Probably split where it is.

Wood dogs had fun with finding deer parts.

Makin Brad salivate by saving that BL stick. How many acres do you have to hoard from?

It's a little over a face cord, and when it was really cold 2 weeks ago, we went through half a faceOld drafty farmhouse can quickly eat up the warmth

I better get my address unlisted so Brad can't find me.

We own 5 acres. Over 4 is woods. Lots of old growth BL and BC. Been trying to save what I can. I declared war on the vines when we moved in. They were just crazy, out of control killing everything. Starting to see the payoff now. Going to take out the tree of heavens too. Tons of those crap trees. Plan is to start replanting with hardwoods, and assorted fruit trees.

That's some nice wood you're able to save. We're burning some dead standing cherry I found earlier this year. Heartwood is some good stuff

Nice work! Reminds me of most of my BL scrounges. Seems like you spend more time getting the wood uncovered rather than cutting it.

I can see a gnome inside that BL log.

Today I split and stacked the pile that was staged near the empty stacks.
