Once dry and split that wood will get you through your cold winters.You could try and split that Elm now but I would wait till it's real cold out.Let it sit in the cold for a while.It'll split easier.You can cut it down to length now if you want just let it sit in the cold afterwards then split.
The Canadian Elm in Ottawa is soft and pliable. It prefers the groves (read: grovels) of the Chinese Elm (word has it that the current Elm is a Chinese transplant) over the stronger and truer American Elm. The future sees the current resident Elm replaced by a true Canadian Elm that does not bend with every wind that blows from the east.
