My mechanic cut a limb off a tree and was wondering what species it might be. I read through some of Tree ID tips for newbies and Googled Elm ID. I think this is an elm but I noticed that the leaf lobes in my pic are smoother than the lobes I'm seeing here and on Google. My mechanic said that when the limb was cut it almost poured water from the cut.

Well, it is elm for sure. If it's American or Siberian is another story without a pic of the tree standing. The leaves and their color look more Siberian but the bark doesn't look right for my neck of the woods. Sorry I can't be of more help.

You've got it down to Elm, so that's lots of help. I'll see if I can get a pic of what's still standing tomorrow.

It’s elm, that’s all you need to know. Great firewood when it’s standing dead with the bark falling off. But the stuff in your picture, not so much! It will be a pain to split and 3 years to dry enough to burn well. He should have girdled the tree to kill It and come back in 4 years to make it into firewood

Red Eyed Elm is what they use to call it around here. American elm.

There's not much difference burning wise between the two. I'd think it's probably American elm.

Because you live in Ontario, it can't be American elm. Plain and simple, it is Canadian elm!

In the last two years I’ve gotten 4-6 cords of elm and have had no issues splitting it. Could this be due to variety? Regional differences? I would take 10 cords of elm over 1 cord of gum!

Kind of like how our box elder can't be Manitoba maple because we're in the US.

Alright, that settles it. I'm telling him it's a Canadian Elm.

He cut the large limb off cause it was getting dangerous. There is a row of them at the back of the parking lot. I've wrestled with Elm before; i"ll pass thanks. Perhaps jrider might like it?

If it weren't for the border issues.. and distance.. I'd surely take that off your hands
    :handshake:

My splitter doesn't seem to mind elm.
