Your insurer is only going to be concerned that you modified the insured property correctly. I think they will deal only with you and hold you accountable for the competency of the work done. I know your safety issue will be corrected, but as Dave said, is there any review of his past work before some family is lost due to his built in fire traps. I hope you are able to move on from here and enjoy your wood burning experiences. It is an enriching experience.

I'm truly amazed at the crappy, pizz poor, hack-job, "so called professional installations" we often see here and elsewhere on the other sites. Just because you have a banner or your name on the side of a van or truck doesn't mean squat!!!!

For a state/municipality or insurance company to require "professional installation" before giving a permit or insurance is insane......................unless they have some knowledge in the field.......................and time and time again, as with the OP's situation, they prove they know nothing, and it's all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

The company insuring the house only cares about passing the liability off to the installer's insurance.

This is exactly why Sawsalls should need a license to operate. If it's any consolation I am going through my house and ripping out and redoing all kinds of stuff because a previous bonehead contractor. Example: 16 feet of siding, sheathing, structure ripped out a few weeks ago because of rot. Why? Deck attached to house - aluminum flashing touching pressure treated (electrolysis) - nails through flashing (what good is flashing at that point?) Do it yourself, you will do it better.

I have been busy at work, I work at a dairy and some of our producers have been slacking and I need to compel/help them fix their milking procedures and sanitation. I also have been adding a 24x40 gravel parking area to my driveway. I reinsullated my attic this weekend and replaced all 3 spindles on my zero turn mower. So I finally got around to sistering the rafters.

I cut out the drywall around the pipe and framed out the stove pipe. All it required was 1 1x8 from lowes, a handful of screws and 6 joist hangers and about an hour of my time. Getting the drywall back in and looking decent will probably take a fair amount time as it is tedious work.

The installer has not contacted me back. I have filled out a complaint with the CSIA, his certifying body. No word back from them.

I will take some pictures when I get home.

I have been on a DIY RAMPAGE lately and forgot to up load the picture before I replaced my gable vent that squirrels have been trying to chew through.

Here is what the fix is. It looks uneven due to the drywall. The rafters are very sturdy. I had to run the electric above the joist hanger. It may not be perfect but at least the rafter is supported.

Is that a 1x8 or 2x8? Not being picky- just wondering if “1x8” was a typo?

You are correct it is a 2x8.

Very nice!!! That's the correct way, take a picture of it and send it to the "PRO" who initially did the install! ;)

    Update...

The installers insurance company called and left me a voice mail while I was at work. They asked to call back to file a claim.

Sorry I am a little late to the party. I kept skipping over this thread because I do not know much about stove pipe, however today I thought well let me read it and learn something.

First the person that did this was totally negligent in their work. Is it a disaster ? no, being stick framed 16 on center it would probably stand as long as the house, but it is still wrong. If it were 24 on center trusses I would be more concerned.
your repair is good but the "headers" you added should be doubled, again is it going to fail ? no. Those rafters could of been 24 on center and been fine so what you have done is adequate. Will it fly when the ins.companies get involved ? probably not.

I would leave the rock off until the insurance company buys off on the fix. Then they own it. So glad you did not use 1x lumber.

Yes. I am going to try to call them on break tomorrow. I talked to them momentarily the other day before the call was disconnected. The insurance agent said I am recording this call...

Yeah, I might have to redo the whole thing with 2 2x8s and 4 inch joist hangers like weldrDave's diagram displays. It was boneheaded to only use one.

They sell “double” joist hangers. Four of those and then two regular hangers for the rafter. I really like my palm nailer to drive in the nails for these things. Especially in tight places.

Seems to me that the rafters on either side should be doubled, rather than the hanger between the 2. Why double a 32"L 2x8 rafter hanger when the rafters are 12' or maybe even 16' long?
