Sounds like me 20 years back - doing Synoptics (pre 10baseT days) and Cisco when no one knew who they were. Now just enjoy the dividends from AT&T and BCE. Old and boring (like me) is good.

Retired BCE guy from marketing/sales/forestry/consultant/you name it/ background. Us lefties cause lots of angst amongst those who resist change. Now just a all purpose gadfly.

I cut my teeth on Syntoptics hubs and Wellfleet routers before they merged into Bay Networks, then Nortel. Times sure have changed.

Just pulled a Nortel (now Avaya) switch with bad fans out of a rack. Pain in the butt with all the wires in front. Its inevitable that at least one patch cord is braided in. But you got to love lifetime warranty on them. They just send you another.

55XX series? Fans are about the only thing that ever fails on them. I have customers with 5510/5520 switches that are 8+ years old and still chugging along. Somewhere out there are some 450's that are about 12 years old.

Exactly. We found one and then realized we had four others that have fans. I got some more work this afternoon.

I get a kick out of the 'rebranded' switches they send for advance replacement. Peel off the ugly silver Avaya sticker, and underneath that is the Nortel logo.

Auto unit replacement in a stack makes things a bit easier. It doesn't help when sorting through the disconnecting/reconnecting the cables from the from though, especially if there are multiple VLANs and no cable color association to run off.

(Apologies for the technical thread derail).

Hey guys, new to the forum. I'm from up in the Canadian prairies, where there's usually no shortage of cold days and winter. Me and the missus, a small shack, a small stove, 2 dogs, and life is good. Well, good enough anyways.

I'm on my second year of burning, so I have more clues than I don't.:D

    I'm not that photogenic.

Look, I don't care who you are, I ain't cleaning my stove glass or ash lip for anybody! I'll probably drib and drab pics of my epic woodcutting adventures, my little stove, and my little saw eventually.

I am Jim, living just north of Cincinnati, OH. Joined up to learn a lot more about wood burning and insert options, in hopes of installing an insert in Spring 2016 to fill the current masonry fireplace in my 22 year old home. I learned about wet wood year before last and started my splitting and stacking last year after having 25 Ash trees cut off my lot from the EAB. I do lots of other stuff and figured this would be a good extension to some of my DIY and outdoors passions.
