We have a Vigilant stove, bought from Vermont Castings several decades ago. When we moved from Connecticut to the Garden State the stove was moved along with our other chattel goods. We heat in part with wood, between 2 and 3 cords each winter, depending on the weather. Currently we have a tree service cut down dead ash trees and bring the logs up to where the log splitter lives. Himself cuts to stove length and splits, I stack and am the keeper of the flame.

Thanks for the warm welcome! In Connecticut we lived in Fairfield County. Now we are about as far west as you can get in New jersey, just a couple of miles from the Delaware River. Let me give you some more details of our "woodwork."

You know what they say about firewood - it heats you many times. First when you cut it, again when you split it, third time when you stack it, and finally when you get to burn it. Our firewood is stacked in multiple places, moves from outside to inside downstairs then upstairs by the stove. So there's a small rack near the stove. That's filled from the larger rack in the basement next to the door outside. Then there's a couple of cords just outside the door with a metal roof and vertical tarps to keep the wood dry. So by the time the firewood goes in the stove it's nice and dry. There's more split wood outside, tarped over the top of the stack. The wood Himself is currently splitting will probably be for the winter after next. If not even further out.

I'm going to try and upload a couple of pictures. Let's see how this works out . . .

Got it. One year I stacked firewood as a holzhaufen. Very efficient for volume, somewhat inconvenient for unloading. Looks very good.

And this is our Domino cat, who really likes to nap under the stove where it is nice and warm.

Enough for now. Bye for now.
