Hey eSk8er , Welcome to the Club! I live in Lakewood (Tacoma) here. Go for the Fir! Also get a screen if you don't have one. Give me a holler anytime!
Not 100% sure of what a fireback is. The wood question you should post in the other section of the forum known as "The Wood Pile". Its the most viewed section IME here. Maybe a fellow PNW member can help you better. I personally would burn the apple being a "hardwood" which is all i burn. Its my understanding softwoods are the common wood of choice there. I just dont know if its okay to burn in an open fireplace. Calling metalcuttr He's a PNWer and can help more than i.
Welcome to the forum, eSk8er! I've always wanted a fireback. It would make my fireplace a more efficient heat source. They are pricey, though. Salvaged manhole cover, maybe? Firebacks: What They Are, Why You Need One - Charlotte NC
Thanks for the offer! The back of my fireplace is 18x24", so anything smaller than that would work. Just keep it in the back of your mind.
I think I know of a 1 inch plate I could cut a piece that size off of. It would be roughly 120lbs. Would that work?
It certainly would! That is a massive piece of steel. I bet it would radiate a lot of heat back into the room.
Hi I’m Hank, Still trying to figure out how this whole forum thing works. I was driving one day and I was behind a truck that looked like it and whoever was in it put in some hard work in a day. I also noticed I sticker on it with a two man cross cut saw and the letters “FHC.” I had to google it and found one of the coolest places on the internet. Full of information and good people. Also, way better than facebook. I currently live in the city with a wood burning fireplace I never get to use, but love to cut wood for fun at my family’s farm. Looking forward to moving back to farm to cut more wood and be more self sufficient. Here’s pictures of the pile I made last fall.
